I can't lie, I'm stil a little bummed about passing on PJ3. I had a sick feeling in my stomach when we did, He really could be a star and to not have to trade up for him would of been great. I'm praying this guy does not make everybody look bad. Why did we pass on him?!
*CB Miami Heat*
Kyle Lowry, Dwayne Wade, 13th pick in even numbered rounds, 18th pick in odd numbered rounds.

Heres how you feel better:  the Heat didn't pick him.  Nor did any other eastern conf team.  Teams passed on him because he is the type of guy IF he becomes a star it will likely be for his second team after his first team put in all the work for him.  Boston is trying to win now and we needed guys who may contribute this year.  He wasn't that guy.

The "EXPERTs" , all say that Sully was a top 10 player in a deep draft. Just that alone says he was STOLEN.   With a million dollars he can afford a new pair of tennis shoes to help his back and the Celtics have trainers and PT's that can go  ALONG way into making his life much easier.

My wife is a sports therapist ( PT) commented last night she is confident with him being so young, they can get him straightened out completely!!!.  Sully , with proper professional help ...very well may feel so much better , that we may see a marked improvement in his athletic abilitiy and motor.!!! ;)

So in other words Danny moved us up a lottery pick (without) trading , or spending money !!!!

So for a few pair of special sneakers, and some PT attention by the staff , we can have a possible starter year after next !!

Now thats being a picky value oriented shopper !!

Knowing what I know now , Sully was the best choice of the two.

Passing on PJ3 was foolish.  He has All-Star Level talent.   Fab Melo isn't as good as Moultrie.
OKC just got flexibility.  If KG comes back, then Fab was part of that deal.  If not, we will rue the day when Sullinger is out with injury and Fab Melo is seen fleeing Best Buy with the New IPAD under his arm.

Everyone else passed on him too, I would have liked PJIII too but it's time to move on! I would assume that most of the people whining about Perry Jones III might have seen 1 Baylor game...ever

How is Melo going to contribute next season? Doc doesn't play rookies. Especially a rookie who won't be ready with a low bb iq and a questionably attitude. We will be sorry for this pick for a long time.

hmmmm... i think we are supposed to make him feel BETTER about the celtics passing on pj3, not drive him to heavy drinking about it. ;D

for what it is worth, that so many teams passed on him probably means his knees are a real concern for everyone. perhaps all the teams are being extra skiddish because of what happened to brandon roy.

a real talent, roy only played 5 years before his knee problems made him quite basketball. in those 5 years he only played in over 70 games twice, averaging 64 games a season.

maybe pj3's knees are really bad. if so, then ainge was right to pass on him.

look at the trailblazers...sam bowie, bill walton, oden, roy.... each and everyone a potential or real star....the only one to make any impact was walton and his peanut-butter ankles. and that took being the 6th man on a great celtics team for him to win a championship.

pj3 at his peak is not as good as any of those players. with his knees he ceiling is probably much, much lower.  almost every nba GM thought "thanks, but no thanks. way to risky for my taste."

so, you should feel bad for pj3 and his achy knees, not the celtics.

but now you have to return the favor and convince me that melo's brain will allow him to learn doc's defensive schemes and that he will become a credible player for the celtics.  ;D

I was so high on Perry 2 seasons ago.He reminded me KG.I felt in love!
But it was HUGE disappointment for me - especially this year! He was AWFUL.He just f@@@d up.Terrible on D.Lil bit more than NOTH on Offense.

And now his knees! Sorry guys.OKC took bust.We - not!

Because, the 22nd pick generally determines the fate of the franchise...

If Perry Jones becomes an all star then great, good for him. If drafting Fab brings KG back for another year or two then Danny made the right pick. I don't care if people hate this pick, I would scared of everyone here loved Sullinger and Melo.

How many Centers has Danny Ainge drafted in Boston??

He's going to bust. He averaged 12 ppg in high school. He isn't quick, he isn't smart and doesn't work hard.

Think Gerald Green.

I think they were willing to take the chance on either Sullinger or PJ3, but not necessarily both. So they had to choose between the two. But how did they come to that decision?

OK, I'm glad you asked, because its very important issue, but easily explained given the right tools. The Celtics are on the leading edge of sports franchises using sabermetrics and other quantitative analysis tools to help the evaluate players and predict future performance. Below is the simple cleaned up version of the so called Ainge Equation, which has led them to unearth Rondo, Tony Allen, Avery Bradley and other late 1st round gems*:

Xρs∑k+0∞Yk(k−1)akρk−2m+2z^12(s+1)ρs−1∑k-N*0∞kakρk−1*h−9ρs∑k+0∞kakρk−1+(η−1−s)ρs−1∑k/0∞akρk+[s(s+1)−l(l+1)]ρs−2∑k, f(x)0∞akρk=?

I won't bore you with all the details, but just for an idea to get a quick handle on the above:

x= wingspan expressed in centimeters
y = age in months
m = vertical leap
f = conference strength
h = a score based on a proprietary exam called "Hoopsaptitude" developed for the Celtics at MIT

We could go on here, but suffice to say that Sullinger and PJ3 scored EXTREMELY close to one another on the Ainge equation, and in fact, PJ3 was ajudged slightly better on this score. HOWEVER, in cases where two scores fall within a margin of error, Ainge and his team have other, more simplistic tools at their disposal. They found some game tape and used the following formula to AUGMENT the Ainge Equation:

Having watched the game, the player:

Was very good in the game ---> +1 pt
Kinda sucked in the game ------> 0 pts

It was not until this FINAL AND DECISIVE piece of data was conjured that they were able to separate the two players.

* Note that the Ainge Equation was altered slightly after the choice of JR Giddens.

PJ3 has several red flags, and his knee injury might hurt his athleticism, which is part of his upside. He is a high risk, high reward kind of guy compared to Sullinger who is low risk, high reward (according to the Celtics medical staff).

PJ3 is Rashard Lewis 2.0 version.

We got players who can readily help us - even help us in getting KG to come back for a season or 2. And, we just got stronger in the middle defensively.
