Now, the Celtics would need to clear a bunch of cap room by renouncing free agents in order to make a bid, correct? The timing on this could be difficult.

Could a team with existing cap space (say Sacramento) submit a successful claim on Haywood and then trade him to another team later on?

I don't think so, at least not for the first year.  IIRC, LA couldn't trade Chauncey after claiming him.

FWIW, Perkins averaged 5.1 pts and 6.5 rebs for about the same contract price so does Haywood (5.2 pts, 6.0 rebs) = Perkins?

If so, here is our change to correct the epiccally horrible trade.  Let's trade Green, Melo, and the rights to Krstic for Haywood and someone with a bad contract (to match Nate Robinson's role in the trade).

My point (along with shamelessly dredging up an old debate) is we don't need Haywood at any price.

Yeah, pretty much. Comparable players.

Perk a bit stronger and tougher. Haywood a bit taller and longer. Otherwise, very similar.
