There's a way to get this trade done to get Josh Smith without renouncing our free agents, if we recruited a 3rd team and it needs to make sense for all 3 teams involved.

Boston and Atlanta are over the cap.

If the 3rd team let's say the Nets sends Petro and Farmar (expirings) making 7.75 million combined, Boston send Bass who get's S&T, he would probably earn between 5-6 million in his first year.

We give the Hawks 21 and 22 to make it happen, Atlanta would have back to back to back picks.

Boston sends Atlanta cash 3 million to buyout Petro.

Boston could still resign their own free agents and have cap space next summer if Pierce and KG retires, and Smith expires.

Both Smith and Rondo recruits Howard next year and Smith takes less so Howard signs a max contract, all that and we can keep Green I think if he signed a cap friendly contract.

However Nets need guys signed since they're way under the cap and Farmar and Petro aren't bad contracts (expirings) so they would probably want a 2nd, hopefully Atlanta gives them one.

Boston shouldn't give up more than 2 firsts.

On second thought, will the Nets renounce their free agents if Deron leaves ?

They are over the cap with their cap holds, and if they get a trade exception if Deron leaves in a S&T, they also will resign Wallace so don't know right now.

It depends, with a weak free agency they might not renounce anyone this summer but the next.

But the Kings are another trade partner, I think the Hawks would accept to take on Garcia(expiring). His final year is fully unguaranteed so they could waive him and we still send cash to the Hawks to try and buyout Garcia this summer.

The only way this happens is if Josh lets Atlanta he wants out and Atlanta decides they want to blow it up.  I can't see that happening this season.

It's much more likely and much more cost effective for us to just have one more ride with KG this season, and then sign Josh as a FA.

If we load up on one year deals, trade this years picks for a future lotto, it's possible I believe for us to have Rondo/Bradley/Smith/lotto guy core four which would be great.  Or less than unlikely, Howard.

You cannot trade free agents with draft picks.  It is impossible under the terms of the C.B.A.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

Houston has made it clear they are going after Josh Smith if not Howard.  They have more and better picks than us (not to mention players like Lowry, Scola and Martin).
