  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
It was a blast being a part of this last year and I would be happy to play along again.  One thought: for the most part this is a beer savvy crowd and I love that aspect (I tried as many of your beer selections as I could find) but would anyone be interested in adding a couple of "featured spirits" selections? Not a mixed drink or a style of spirits but a specific bottle of a spirit you would like to feature.

I like the idea, but couldn't that work under specialty drinks?

It could but when I think of "specialty drink" I think of a mixed drink (Irish Car Bomb, Martini, etc.) not a specific branded bottle (Macallan 18 yr, Woodford Reseve Bourbon etc.).  Either way would work but if there are other people who are into spirits it may be a way to pick up some ideas on new bourbons/scotches/tequilas etc to try out kind of like how last year we may have been turned onto a new beer we did not know about.  Personally I have gotten more into spirits the past year but if there's not enough interest it doesn't make sense to have a seperate category.

I'll open this up to the floor. I tend to lean to keeping it as apart of the specialty drink category, and the perception of what a specialty drink is would be interpreted by the bar owner. But if enough people think it should be its own category I'd do it.

Right now I think we should keep it the specialty drink category just because we are already at 18 rounds.  But I think you should be able to select a fine bottle of bourbon if you want.

'high-end bourbon', 'high-end irish whiskey', 'high-end scotch' should all be options, same with tequila, vodka, rum, brandy, etc...

Of course.  I just used Bourbon since thats one of the things Chicagoceltic brought up.  Specific bottles of booze can fit in the speciality drink category.

No, I mean as a pick in the draft, you should be able to just state "High-end tequila".

In  SO's guidelines he said Jameson would be a draft pick, so I will defer to him on how he feels about this one.

Does this mean you are planning on having uniforms a category?  If so, this is a nice pick!

It means work gave me a stupid gift card and since I'm a moron with these things I'm working to spend it on the most unnecessary things possible.

I don't know, isn't picking 'high end tequillas' kind of a lame pick? Shouldn't you have to say which one?

I don't think so, who is going to go to a bar because they serve patron? Now, if they served what could not be argued as 'the best high-end tequila selection in the world', I'd pop my head in and hold on to my socks.

But isn't selecting 'the world's greatest tequilla' a total cop out? I mean, I don't go to any bar because they offer a specific drink, I'll go to a bar because they have a good bar selection. Or cheap prices. OK, mostly cheap prices.

I might not go to a bar because they serve Patron, but would I rather go to a bar that serves Patron rather than Cuervo?  Probably.

I dunno, I think this whole thing is about developing the perfect mix of aspects to your pub, not being the only bar to serve good tequila.

Not sure if that makes sense.

RULES UPDATE:

1. We're going to keep it at 6 beers, no breweries, sorry, champ. I won't say I disagree with any of your points - but I think the upside of urgency and opening the vault a little for more beers doesn't outweigh the possibility of a gray area. Last year was a ton of fun, but I think the one downside was the few times we got a little hung up trying to navigate through that territory.

2. Spirits are going to be included in specialty drink. Not sure if the demand is there, and again, I don't really see why it wouldn't.

3. No 'high end' generic picks; you select a specific liquor and it takes it off the draft list.

FOR CLARITY - If I select Jack Daniels as a shot, it's off the table completely. You can't select it in a mix.

----

One other clarification -

As we handled it last year you have the option to either serve a seasonal draft all year long OR a seasonal line.

So selecting Sam Seasonal gives me the option to serve Sam Summer year round, or one tap that serves the appropriate seasonal drink.

I LOVE the seasonal draft tap...that allowed me to pour cool Three Floyds all year long!

So the big question is; is Dark Lord considered a seasonal since its only available one day a year?

Unofficially - my idea for seasonal beer was that you did have the option to sell it year long. So yes, you could sell Dark Lord (if you were real hush, hush about it) all year long.

But I also don't care all that much, so if someone has a reason why we shouldn't allow that I'd love to hear it.

There would be a significant mark-up for the bomber bottles.  You should see what they go for on Ebay.

But if it was available year long the price would go down? THIS is what Ashton Kusher warned us about!

If it was exclusive to that bar and only available at the brewery on Dark Lord Day, then you're still going to make a killing.
