88. Can a free agent be signed and immediately traded? There is a rule that allows teams to re-sign their own free agents for trading purposes, called the sign-and-trade rule. Under this rule the player is re-signed and immediately traded to another team. This is done by adding a clause to the contract stipulating that the contract is null and void if the trade to the specific team is not completed within 48 hours. To qualify for a sign-and-trade, all of the following must be true: •The player must finish the preceding season with that team (deals are no longer allowed that sign-and-trade players who are out of the league, such as the sign-and-trade that sent Keith Van Horn from Dallas to New Jersey as part of the Jason Kidd trade in 2008).
The out of the league part is gray. I would think there is a difference between a retired player, and one who sits out a year for medical purposes, or plays over seas for a year - just so long as you keep his cap hold on the books. In Ainge's interview yesterday on weei, I was under the impression that Green and Kristc were sign and tradeable assets just like Bass and Ray.
Good question but I think it's mostly irrelevant, because Jeff Green's value is so low right now, he's worth more to us than anything we'll get in a trade. Also he has chemistry and continuity with this group which makes him more valuable to us than any other team except Oklahoma City.

It's hard to say without reading the actual text of the CBA, which I don't believe is online yet. However, based on what Coon says, it appears pretty clear that we cannot trade him.

In general, it sounded like Danny was inclined to bring a lot of their guys back.

Yea, that crap about 10 or so teams interested in Jeff Green seemed like a mere smokescreen. Assuming the C's don't go outta their way to hurt his feelings, I don't see how Jeff Green's not in a Boston jersey next season.

Good point but would you rather have 5 million dollar trade exception or Jeff Green? I don't think we can get anything with the T.E. better than Jeff Green.
