This kid is undersized, un-athletic and now has medical issues. I will pass unless we buy a 2nd rounder. Wasting a first rounder on this kid is a mistake.

I'm so sick of Danny drafting undersized/un-athletic bigs who we constantly watch get rejected by bigger more athletic players. Baby was useless when he got a offensive board, because the moment he tried to go up he got blocked. Baby wasn't a great post defender and quite honestly (even though I love the guy) neither was Leon Powe, Ryan Gomes, Brandon Hunter, Justin Reed, or Luke Harangody.

Look I know tall/skilled big men are hard to come by late in the draft I get that, but Danny really amazes me sometimes. I remember when we drafted JR Giddens over D'Andre Jordan...D'ANDRE JORDAN. The kid is 7ft with a 37" vertical and was 250 pounds out of a year of college. Yes he was raw, but he was also had a lot of upside, and honestly we could of used him the past few years.

DANNY PLEASE NO MORE UNDERSIZED BIGS!!!!!!!!

Well you have to take into account that by the time 21 comes around no bigs except Fab Melo are projected to be in that range that you could take at that spot without a public flogging being called for. That being said if Sullinger falls to them that's an absolute no brainer.

You could say that about a couple of guys each year in the NBA draft.  It is loaded with tall guys who can jump and run.  That's why the are in the draft to begin with.

The fact is that Sullinger was at one point projected to be a Top 5 pick.  He came back to school, had a good year, his team did well, but his combine results and physical have now dropped him almost out of the lottery in most projections.

Sounds to me like a Danny special.

He's 6'8 6'9 but plays way bigger than his size.

Ryan Hollins fits your description of a tall, athletic big.

I would not want either Melo or Sullinger both have finite ceilings the best of which they have already peaked I would wager in the NCAA.   2nd rounder yes he is worth that but not a first in this draft.

He can barely get above the rim and lacks lift.  I am from OH and now live in KY.  The Big Ten is not the strong conference it used to be, not in football and not in basketball.  It still produces some good teams the competition is not what it used to be folks.

Every single player mentioned in your post was a second round pick (other than Giddens, who was #30).  When you're pikcing big men that late, you're looking for guys who are:

1. Good size for their position
2. Athletic
3. Smart and dedicated
4. Skilled
5. Good upside
6. No injury red-flags

Problem is, you're lucky if there's anyone at that point in the draft who meets two of those criteria.  When picking late, Danny has tended to go for players who have shown a pretty good skillset (and some NBA-ready abilities), rather than picking big guys just because they happen to be big.

D'Andre Jordan would have been a nice pickup, but every team passed on him, not just us.  There were big questions about his dedication, IIRC, and now he's getting paid a ton of money to put up seven points and grab eight boards.  It's not like we failed to draft an All-Star.

It'd be an interesting exercise to look at all the *big* men (6'10 or taller) who have been drafted in the range of guys you present, how many of them have proven to be actual NBA players.    Three of the six bigs you mentioned as Danny picks have had legitimate NBA success, which is a pretty good "hit" ratio.

How is Sullinger undersized? He is 6'9" with an 8'11" standing reach.

That is prototypical.

Plus, he can knock down the college three, and drains foul shots. The kid will be a very good starter in this league for a long time - somewhere on the spectrum between David West and Kevin Love.

Not to pile on, but Ohio State was the top defensive team in the nation last season.

Sullinger is a player. If he falls to us it will be a gift.

Defensively

  - Too slow for Doc's defensive rotations

Offensively

  - Too short and no lift to be effective

Remember in college he was a man among boys at the 5 spot, in the NBA he will be a slow, overweight , short 4 with no lift and back problems.

Which means....he'll be a Celtic.

my concern with him is the health issue with his back.

at that late in the draft, a good big man is hard to find (and Melo ain't it).  this kid has skills that surpass Big Baby's.  If he can work the post and draw fouls on the other team (even if he has difficulty getting his shot off, if he draws a foul and gets to the line where he's capable of hitting his FTs, it's still a plus) I think that he's worth a chance with one of the picks.  I wouldn't move up to get him, but if we keep our picks and he's there, I wouldn't object to the pick provided he clears all medical checks by the team.

6'10 is ideal for a PF I think? He's 6'8 but yeah, PFs have gotten smaller.

He is 6'9" with shoes, and that is how they list players.

He is the exact same height without shoes as: Kurt Thomas, Antawn Jamison, Kevin Love, Ersan Ilyasova, David Lee, Carlos Boozer, Thomas Robinson.

He may not be considered tall for a PF, but he is not short either.

Either way, what matters is whether he can play...and Sullinger can play.
