JJJ's immediate future in the league is running the fast break, playing around the rim, grabbing boards, blocking shots, and in the half court game extending defenses by hitting 18-footers at the 4.

He is not going to be a go-to option, he is not going to get plays called for him.  He will get 15 min a game off the bench.  We need 7 pts, 3 rebs, .5 blks a game from him, or something like that.  A few fast break dunks to get the crowd amped.  That's all.  I think he is more than capable of that for us.

7 pts in 15 minutes is pretty darned good!

As important as the actually weight is I hope it translate into added functional lower body strength.

  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
Isn't his problem is not picking up the defensive schemes?
I mean sure, adding weight should be a good thing, but as long as he's still not picking up the rotations and everything, he's still not leaving the bench.

Well, in his defense, we had a limited preseason with little practice time during the season due to the lockout and age of this team.  So Johnson didn't have a lot of time to pick up things.

So with some more weight and more practice, he could very well make huge strides next year.

And while he may not have what it takes to be a star, his skill set actually fits very well with Rondo, PP, KG, etc. as he can hit an open jumper and finish at the rim.  That's really all that it takes to be successful when you play with these guys.

Just go to the KFC buffet or follow DA BIG BABY around a few days and 25 pounds wouldn't be out of the question.

His weight doesn't concern me nearly as much as how lost he appeared every time he got minutes.

but so did Avery until he got consistent minutes.  I'm expecting a better showing from him this year.

I say go for 10 more, dude is a twig.
yea I'm with you guys, KG weighs 253 and he has a hard time with bangers sometimes. I would like to see JJJ at 235 at least

Kg is a little taller and was probably around 235-245 when he was JJJ's age in the league. But yes I'd like to see him add another 10 at least.

Yeah, KG is a hair taller and yeah, he was much skinnier when he was younger.  Here are some numbers I posted on the other JJ thread, listing the pre-draft measurements for a variety of notable big men:

Kevin Garnett  6' 11", 217
Marcus Camby  6' 11", 220
Chris Bosh    6' 11.5", 225
Amare Stoudemire  6' 10", 233
Detlef Shrempf  6' 9", 214
Larry Nance    6' 10", 205
Rashard Lewis  6' 10", 190
Kevin Willis  7' 0", 220
P.J. Brown   6' 10", 225
Dikembe Mutombo  7' 1.25", 228
Lamar Odom   6' 10", 220
...
JaJuan Johnson  6' 10", 220

Most of those ar official combine measurements, but a few are not, so I put down the 'with shoes' measurement instead of the barefoot.

KG came out of H.S. so was a couple of years younger than JJ, but its doubtful he was near his current playing weight even by JJ's age.

Most (practically 99.9%) of men stop growing vertically by ages 18-19.  But they continue to put on muscle mass through natural hormone-driven growth up to about age 26-28.

I'm sure the JJ has been weight training and pounding the weight gain shakes, but the truth is he'd probably have put on that 10 lbs anyway and will probably put on another 5-10 naturally over the next couple of years.

In terms of height/weight/build, JJJ correlates to guys like Amir Johnson, Hakim Warrick, and Jonas Jerebko.

I am not so worried about his weight as I am about his strength and agility. He'll never be able to be a bruiser on the blocks, but as long as he outquicks/outjumps/outhustles the competition, he can be a decent rotation player.

If only we'd kept Big Baby.  He would have been a great role model for JaJuan.  He could have taught him a thing or two about how to pack on the pounds.

We're hearing talk from Pierce that Avery Bradley was actually thriving in practice last year and just needed PT and confidence to do the same thin in NBA games.  I wonder how JJJ holds up in the few practices the Cs have had this past season.

From what I've seen from Johnson so far in games, he doesn't look strong enough to be a good NBA player.  I was monumentally wrong about Bradley, so I'll reserve judgment until JJJ gets some real rotation minutes.

I won't move off my initial opinion that Brooks would have been a great addition instead of Johnson, however.  I see Brooks as being a big time scorer for the next decade, and i also seeing him rounding out his one dimensional game as he matures.

I'm not feeling particularly "special" that I fall into the .1%!!  Somebody owes me 4-5 more years of growing!!   >:(

I keep reading this apples-to-oranges comparison, and I flatly don't buy anyone's conclusion that "because Bradley did, Johnson will." Individuals are different, and Bradley could always defend. JJJ has shown me nothing thus far, and I'm not going to cling to him until he suggests that he might actually be an NBA player. I don't subscribe to the frantic clinging to every single Ainge draft choice that goes on here.
