He has been Steve Lavin's assistant coach at St. John's the last two years (and basically interim head coach last year while Lavin was out with cancer). He is fantastic at player development and Xs and Os --- he was also an assistant coach for the Nuggets under George Karl (who happens to have influence with MJ) who probably helped a lot in Jordan giving him the nod.
As a St. John's fan, I have been thrilled with him. His player development is a lot of why the team made the tourney in 2011 with 9 seniors who were .500 forever under the prior regime, and he is one of the guys largely responsible from Moe Harkless going from a 50ish ranked senior out of high school to a potential lottery pick in 1 season.
I have no idea if he can be an elite coach, but Charlotte will defintely improve their players and win more games over the next few years with Dunlap at the helm.
Gotta wonder if Charlotte might try to deal their #s 2 and 31 for Houston's #14, #16 and one of Lowry/Martin/Scola so that Dunlap can take his st johns guy in Harkless at 14 or 16.
Dunlap could be a LOT like Thibs --- master at Xs and Os and gettign the most out of his players, in which case, the Bobcats will have hit a home run. Heard it didn't hurt that Shaw was asking for too much money.
