I found this article interesting!!  It seems that of the five promises mentioned, 4 of them were probably by Danny Ainge!!

Here is the paragraph of interest:

But promises do exist -- Olshey said when he was working for Tellem, they received promises for Shelden Williams, Marcus Banks, Kendrick Perkins, Kedrick Brown and Robert Swift. Sometimes, the promises don't work out -- Swift in 2004 got a promise from Boston at No. 14, but he was chosen by Seattle at No. 12.

It sure sounds like Danny's modus operandi is to make promises.

Thoughts??

I think that he made a promise to Giddens.

If that is the case, I use that as example #1 that promises should rarely be made as it limits any options/surprises/sliders that may arise on draft day.

First of all Danny wants you to know he had nothing to do with Kedrick Brown.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
I'm sure Danny Ainge has made promises to players. I think sometimes promises are part of a reason why you see a guy slipping farther than you think he should.

If you thought you'd have a pick of players q thru z, but didn't think you could pick a player a thru p, you'd make a promise to one of the players in your range, so they wouldn't work out or interview with other teams in your range, helping the odds that they drop to you.

But, if you make that promise to Arm Tellum, a powerful agent, even if a player from that more talented a thru p range drops to you, you're better off honoring your promise.

I think this happens a lot.

IP,

Yes this happens a lot.  But, it sure looks like Danny does this as much, or more likely MORE, than other GM's!!

It happened with Orien Greene, from what I read. Danny said he'd draft him in the second round, but someone like  Amir Johnson was unexpectedly available. Danny offered to give him a better contract as an undrafted free agent but Greene and his agent insisted Danny go ahead and draft him.
