Got a question..
Lets say we trade #21, #22 etc. to Hornets for #10 and Okafor and make them draft a guy we want. But the fact is that we cant really "trade" for them before July the 1.
So is it possible for the Hornets to back off the trade, lets say 2 days after the draft, even tho they "wasted" their draft pick on a guy they might not even want?

I don't see why not. Because you can't "trade" those picks for Okafor on draft night. You only, at best, have a handshake.

I'm pretty sure guys make trades in principal and the. Finalize them when the season turns over. Don't they?

Edit: what Roy said.
in theory that can happen, but how many times do you actually recall it happening.  Also, you can't do that with a free agent in a sign and trade because you can't guarantee a player will sign.

I think people agreeing to something in principal is a lot more binding (in practice, not legally) than you're making it seem.

I think its so commonplace that we literally just don't hear about it. I've heard, 'they need to wait until blah blah to officially complete the trade' more than a few times.
Yeah but the things you hear about are things like physicals, the new season to turn over (to get different salary numbers), a sign and trade during the negotiation period, etc. they aren't things like signing free agents before you are allowed to negotiate with them and then trading them two weeks later because you can't do that under the C.B.A.  Teams can't negotiate with free agents until July 1st, which is after the draft, thus you can't have a trade before the draft involving a free agent.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

Yeah, the deals involving sign and trades would be illegal tampering, not just teams getting creative and making handshake trades that need to wait to go through.

The other thing about pre-arranged trades is that regardless of teams just backing out (which absolutely does happen), when you don't have a deal in writing and approved by the league, it leaves room for misunderstandings.

The best example I can think of is actually in the NHL, where the B's and Leafs had agreed to a trade in principle, that fell apart before they made the trade call, when both sides realized they each thought they were getting the other teams first round pick in it and keeping their own.

And I am willing to bet those type of things happen a decent amount, when guys basically hear what they want to hear, and talk past each other.

So, if you are going to make moves (or draft a player) based on a move that cannot be consummated yet, you really do so at your own risk.

Just ask Steve Kerr, who told a story the other day on NBATV about how he passed up Dru Holliday because he thought he had a deal agreed upon to get Steph Curry.  And when that fell through, he was stuck...and now he is on NBATV.

Exactly.  What happens when you reach a potential trade that can't be finalized and a player neither team thought was going to be available is available and maybe too much to trade.

Or what happens when you reach an agreement and then the player fails the physical (like say Jeff Green and his heart condition).  Then all of a sudden both teams or left out.

Or what if the player is fine with the 4 year, 28 million deal, but during the negotiation period he gets a 4 year, 40 million deal from someone else.

Or any number of other things that could derail a trade even if it was allowed under the rules, which it is not.
