I wanted to understand the scenario in which we can possibly get Dwight Howard in his free agent year?

What is the most likely scenario to do this?

There is no likely scenario where this happens.

It would require a sign and trade of FAs (like Green and Allen for example) or more likely a trade of KG or PP, which would undo your scenario.

Trade Rondo for him.

I'm serious, that is by far the most likely scenario to get Howard.  It is not actually very likely, but it is really the only way it would happen IMO.

The most likely scenario to get Dwight next year when he becomes afree agent is to use the cap money after Pierce and Kg retire. Somehow I think signing Josh Smith would be part of the pitch to sign Dwight.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

We essentially need the same thing that happened in 2008 to happen this summer. If Orlando decides that they need to trade Dwight this offseason two possible scenarios could be:

1) Orlando actually covets Rondo or Rondo is the best player being offered to them for Dwight.

OR

2) If Dwight opens his eyes and realizes the cap space Boston has available along with two future HOFs in PP and KG to play with, and through the back channels he is told that since Rondo would be dealt for him, Boston would sign Deron Williams, he pulls a Melo and lets everyone know he will only sign an extension in Boston.

Obviously Deron Williams probably would say No to Boston as of right now much like KG did in 2008. But if Deron knows the possibilities are great that we land Dwight, he would quickly change is mind, again, much like KG did.

This is probably a pipe dream, but like I said in a different thread, Danny made it happen once so it isn't impossible for it to happen again. The wild card is obviously Orlando and whether or not they would want Rondo and pieces for Dwight in a potential trade or if they would allow Dwight to hold them hostage and force a trade to Boston.

With Dwight Howard opting into his contract, I think that ruled out the possibility of Boston signing him as a free agent.

Not only did he take himself out of this year's free agent class but he has almost definitely forced himself into a situation where he will be traded prior to his contract expiring + almost definitely to be traded to a team where he is happy to sign a long term extension. So it looks unlikely that he will ever see free agency at this point.

A trade is the only realistic hope Boston seem to have of getting Dwight Howard and that package has to be based around Rajon Rondo. And Orlando have to value Rondo higher, as a primary building block or franchise player, than anyone else they are offered for that to have a chance.

The only possible scenerio is if DH makes it to free agency.  Not that Bos would be a favorite to land him (and they may not even have the cap space anymore) but it is at least within the realm of reality.

That said, DH is not getting to free agency.  There is practically a 100% chance that he gets traded, assuming he does not sign an extension.  And assuming he gets traded, the Celts simply do not have the assets to acquire DH even if they include Rondo.

Rondo needs to be involved.

But what will happen is we will package Rondo, draft picks (meaning our future core) and maybe some young player for Howard and maybe we'll take some bad contracts along the way (Turkoglu maybe). And then we'll be always a playoff team but never a contender. And Dwight won't be happy and will request a trade again. By that time his stock would be a bit low i bet.

Rather not.

If it's Rondo for Howard, you can pretty much guarantee that both KG and Ray would be back.  Those 2, PP, Howard and Turkeyglue would certain be a contender for at least 2 more seasons.  I mean, KG and Howard on the court together?  You might see the Celtics hold teams under 10 points for an entire half!

Can't keep both KG and PP and have the cap space to sign Howard, unless it is a sign-and-trade with Rondo.

We have enough cap space right now to sign Howard.  That is not the issue of course.

AS others have said, Boston would have to offer Rondo, Bradley, the 2 first picks, plus probably 1-2 future firsts.

Howard is an MVP candidate, defensive player of the year Candidate, and All NBA 1st team every year (pretty much). There are superstars better than Rondo that would appeal to Orlando. How about Westbrook and Ibaka, Bynum, Wade and or Bosh, Carmelo and Chandler, or Blake Griffin.

Its best not to even think about Howard... yet. I say yet because you never know when he or a team will mess things up.
