Former Boston Celtic, and long-time friend of Kevin Garnett's, Sam Cassell says that the pending free agent forward is discussing retirement, but he does not want to play for anyone other than Celtics coach Doc Rivers if he returns, according to ESPN.

Garnett has been a member of the Celtics, under coach Rivers, since the 2007-08 season. The two have seen a great deal of success together. In five seasons together the pair has won the Atlantic Division five times, and they have never finished worse than fourth in the Eastern Conference. The Celtics also won the NBA Finals in 2008.

"KG is a loyal guy," Cassell said. "I can't see him playing for anyone else except Doc at this point."

While multiple teams will likely be lining up to sign Garnett when free agency opens on July 1, Cassell suggests that the 36-year-old has also been discussing retirement recently.

Garnett averaged 19.2 points and 10.3 rebounds per game through the postseason.

I knew there was no chance he would go to a team like the Lakers or Nets(like thos morons Dennis and Callahan were saying)

So here's what happens either kg comes back at around 8 mil and allows us to resign Jeff Green and another impact big (Kaman,Illyasova,Humpheries)

or

KG retires,we let Jeff Green,Ray and Bass walk and then I would make a run at Javel McGee and Illyasova as my main targets splitting 25 mil between them. I think they would make a very good front court tandem moving forward with Rondo.

25 mil for Illyasova and McGee
12 mil for Bradley and Rondo

puts us around 18-20 mil under the cap if we amnesty PP after next season.

PG: Rondo
SG: Bradley
SF: Max Free Agent
PF: Illyasova
 C: McGee

For me, if KG walks, that's when we blow this thing up like an atomic bomb.

Let everyone go, move everyone for picks, take on overpaid bums for picks. Tank for 2 years. Jabrari Parker will be in the draft in 2 years- looking like the next Lebron James, or the closest thing. I mean this kid looks like a young Paul Pierce he's incredible and he's in 10th or 11th grade or something.

Gather picks, picks and more picks. Given how tough it will be to beat the Thunder and Heat for the next 5 years, I'd even trade Rondo for a top 3-5 pick if we think his window will be gone by the time we've rebuilt.

If KG comes back, go after some solid pieces and get him a complementary big inside. Bass doesn't cut it for me. He's a great bench guy.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

If KG hangs 'em up I agree it's time to blow it up. No reason to pull a Dumars like move.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
Kg isn't walking anywhere. He's talking about retirement cuz he's beat up, tired, and just suffered a demoralizing loss.

He'll heal, he'll get over the loss, and he'll realize he has no idea what to do if he's not training to play next season.

If  KG retires , keep PP if he wants to stay a Celtic till retirement and let Ray go and start over.

I think KG will take a long look at his health, and potential makeup of the Celtics next year before making final decision .

  • You say when......
I say we should think about keeping Ray, PP, and KG..BUT, they have to realize...no more playing EVERY GAME, ALL GAME....limited minutes...just enough to keep in shape, in the flow sorta..and with the teams mix....no more all three starting every game....why...they just won't last a FULL year...and that are most valuable in the playoffs....no injuries...ect.....But we NEED some speed to go with RONDO.slashers, dunkers, layups guys..keep dooling.wilcox if is is a player, steamer, hollins if he gets it going from summer camps....short money 7 footer that has potential....jjj, and moore.....keep bradley.....gotta get bass to be more of a lockdown D on lebron.....

With Pierce mentioning retirement a multiple occasions even though the questions wasn't even posed to him by the reporters, I wouldn't be surprised at all if Pierce decides to hang them up if KG does.

Pierce wants to retire a Celtic and I would have to think he  doesn't want to be traded to aid in a rebuilding and getting younger movement and I am sure he doesn't want to be part of such a movement if he were still playing.

I have to wonder if his mentions of retirement were a tactical approach to pave the way for such a thing if KG decides to hang them up.

The only reasons PP would keep playing for the c's if KG retires are for money or to try and become the Celtics all time leading scorer .

I think this as well, on top of his love for the game its the loyalty I think Pierce and Doc would be reason he comes backs as well. He knows how much Doc loves him and wants him to return and probably knows that if he doesn't come back Pierce is shipped to who knows where. They have that bond think he comes back for one more year on a no trade deal.

yea, Pierce was almost begging for Danny and ownership to bring KG back for two more years so they can retire together in the postgame comments.

KG's legacy is a Celtic.........he wasted his best years in Minn ....I was dying a slow death watching him play there and the Celtics having so much bad luck . while he was there....such as waste... KLove...please LEAVE !!!

KG has the heart of a Celtic and I think he wants to to be remembered as a Celtic and not as last ditch effort somewhere else..like Carl Malone .

I would be tortured with him on another team.

Agreed. I think we line contracts up with pierce. One year deals if ainge knows he isn't paying pierce more then five mill in 2013-14. Or two year deals if waiving pierce after this season isn't really a realistic option.

I figured as much from the beginning. If KG leaves Boston, it will be for the comfort of his own home.

The only way I am for bringing back Pierce is if KG comes back. To me, KG is the key. If he opts to retire, then blow it up. Trade Pierce to Sac for Ty Evans and 5th pick. Draft Drummond. Re-sign Jeff Green. S&T Ray and Bass for Josh Smith.

PG- Rondo
2G- Bradley
WF- Evans
PF- Smith
C- Drummond

Green is 6th man and can back up at 3 and 4.
