Can the Jazz keep both Jefferson and Millsap after their contracts come up next year ?  I smell a trade somewhere down the line.

The Jazz explored trading Millsap via the rumor mill this past offseason. Are they going to do the same this time around ?  I personally feel they want to keep BIG AL.

1 yr and 8 M left on Millsaps contract.  That is something Ainge can trade for if the Jazz are willing to do it for space next season.

Would E'twuan Moore + 2 first round picks get the job done for Millsap ?

So here's my proposal.  A first round pick, Jeff Green signed and traded for $9M for Al Jefferson.

Saves them $6M off their cap (less the draft pick salary), they get a pick and a versatile backup for the 3/4 positions.

Thoughts?

I like the idea.  Getting a guy like Jefferson or Millsap for Green + pick would be ideal.  I personally think Millsap is easier to get than BIG AL.

Obviously the C's need rebounding help. Captain obvious here. Both bring that and then some, especially lined up next to KG.  They both are more valuable to this certain team than Green is, IMO.

I bring back the same team from this year, and parlay the picks + Green if you have to for guys like Jefferson or Millsap.  One or the other would be huge for this team.

I pretty much got laughed at by a Jazz blogger on that one - which doesn't make sense since he's the one that brought up the idea of shopping Big Al, but whatever.  Oh well, I've always said I'm terrible at this.

I've always viewed Al Jefferson as an inferior version of Carlos Boozer.  I would only embrace going after Jefferson if I would be enthusiastic about obtaining Boozer if he were available.  And I'm not.

He can laugh all he wants, but he saw where they landed with both Jefferson and Millsap on the team.  They will lose one this next season, so if they want value now, it might serve them to dump one for space & picks.

Al is exactly what we need - scoring in the half court!!

When the game slows down and the long jumpers aren't falling, we are toast.

Very true.  I'd take him for his rebounding alone.

And since when did Boozer all of a sudden became better than Big Al?

Count me in as one of those who feel we are one true low post PF away from dominating in the EAST.

I'd take a line up of Rondo,AB,PP, Big Al and KG anytime with Jeff Green, MP, Wilcox and our two draft picks.

I would do it at the right price.  Big Al can score in the post and rebound, two things we definitely need.  I'd imagine we'd have to sign-and-trade someone (Bass?) to make the salaries work, and would have to give up both 1st rounders.

If it costs Jeff Green and the picks, count me out.

Per my post above, 2 picks Green and I am out.  1 pick and Green is a possibility.  Green is a much better defender and more versatile (and younger.)

But I am wondering if we can trick the Hawks to sending us Josh Smith instead...

Dude,
Not like this is a new idea around celtic forums.  Big Al is just what the C's need and my guess is Danny will wait until next year when he is a free agent.  He makes 14 million a year not 15 and one can only imagine how much he could do with Rondo at the helm.  There are not that many bigs out there and the Landrys and Millsaps everyone keeps mentioning are the same size as Bass and not that big of a improvement over him.  I say a sign and trade Bass and both firsts if that is what it takes.  Big Al is only 27 and his D improves every year.  This team is so hungry for scoring and not many in the league can create his own shot in the post like Big Al.  I always loved him when he was here.  Sign Green and Garnett and fill up the rest of the bench with minimun deals.

Andrei Kirilenko, Carl Landry, Marcus Camby, potentially Sam Dalembert, potential amnesty candidates like Tyrus Thomas, Brendan Haywood and Al Harrington, Kwame Brown...

You could potentially get 3 of those guys and keep your draft pick for the price of Big Al - or two of those guys and a third perimeter player (Barbosa, Danny Green, Jamal Crawford, Jeff Green, JR Smith, etc.).

Most of those are "meh," and those that aren't (like Landry) are going to require multi-year contracts.  Even some of the middling guys (like Dalembert), I think you're underestimating how much they will ultimately get paid.

To me, the appeal of Big Al is that I think he'd be a difference-maker in 2012-2013, *and* we would essentially be able to save our cap space for the following summer (which should have a lot more attractive free agents).

Let's say we sign Carl Landry (one of the better free agent PFs) and Jamal Crawford.  That strikes me as being essentially the same as the Pistons blowing their cap space on Ben Gordon and Charlie Vilanueva.  Re-signing Jeff Green for too many years scares me as well.  I know Big Al's probably overpaid, but I'd rather overpay and only have one year of commitment.

Who said anything about handing out Ben Gordon and Charlie V. contracts?

Landry was signed on a one-year deal last year, Crawford on a two-year deal.  Dalembert only got one guaranteed year at ~$7 mil.

You could get probably two of those guys (I'd want Landry and Dalembert if Kirilenko was off the market) for around 1 year $15 mil and keep your picks.

Personally I'd rather Landry @ 1 year $8.5 mil  and Dalembert @ 1 year $7 mil (the same deals they got last year) + keep my picks over Big Al.

Landry gives you more efficient volume scoring + better PF defense and Dalembert gives you better rebounding + better C defense.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I know Al has had excellent stats lately, but I haven't seen a lot of his game the last couple of years. How would he compare to Josh Smith, since he is the other pf that has been getting a lot of attention here lately? I know Smith is more athletic and a very good defender, while Al has the great low post game, but who would people rather have here at CB?

Give me big Al anyday over Smith.  I take low post scoring anyday in a big over a jump shooter.
