ubuntu y'all!

My long-time 12-team keeper league (not the celticsblog league ;)), we can keep 5 players --- it's 12 x 12 categories (pitching and hitting).

I'm in 6th place and my pitching (Lester, Becket, Shields, Wainwright, Luebke) has struggled all year (outside of Hamels).

My 5 keepers project to be Miggy, Pedroia, Hamels, JUpton and maybe Wainwright if he gets it together.

I'm considering this trade counter offer but can't make up my mind:

GIVE: Justin Upton, Rafael Furcal, Chase Utley
GET: Eric Hosmer, Ryan Zimmerman, Allen Craig, James McDonald

Upton is the best player but since our league counts strikeouts he's not as great as in a 5x5 league. Utley is still at least a month away and was average in his last 2 seasons after injury.

This seems like (a) too much talent to pass up and (b) buying low on Hosmer & Zimmerman while getting a solid SP in McDonald.

But will Hosmer project to reach that top-20 level that Upton seems to be at/near? Does it matter...? Upton has been about as good as Cameron Maybin in this league and maybe he's plateaued as a player with more promise than talent (2 of 3 seasons have been eh...)

I like the deal but I think it's pretty well balanced. What's your keeper rule? How big are your rosters/benches?

Any 5 guys we can keep as our 1st-5th round picks (pretty vanilla).

21 man rosters. Because of the makeup of our league and how other teams build their teams I tend to go:

9 batters
1 Bench bat

5-6 Starters
5 relievers

My full lineup:

C- Pierzinski (can't spell his name :()
1B - Miggy Cabrera
2B - Pedroia
3B - Jed Lowrie
SS - Furcal
OF - J Upton, Victorino, Maybin
UT - Ortiz
BN - Swisher
DL - Brett Gardner, Utley

SP - Hamels, Lester, Becket, Shields, Wainwright, Jarrod Parker
RP - Brett Myers, Clippard, Street, Reed, A. Bailey

I like that deal for you a lot, GC.  Coming from the defending CB baseball champ and current odds-on favorite to repeat, this should carry some clout  ;)

Hosmer and Zimmerman have the same pedigree as Upton.  They will be stars in this league for a long time.

I'm also real big on Allen Craig, and with his multi-position eligibility he provides a lot of help.  McDonald is the icing on the cake, he has a chance to be a front-end starter.

To me this is a no-brainer - the only problem you might run into is having a tough choice for keepers next year, haha.

It's a nice value and I applaud you for liquidating Utley and Furcal, who have very little long term value, but what are you going to do with the logjam you create at 1B?

I guess my only question is, since you were projecting Upton as a keeper, who would you keep after the trade is made.  Also, who would you cut?  I think the trade is an ok trade for this year (both teams about the same amount of production), but I question it going forward in the future as you are losing a keeper and I don't think you are getting one back.

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah

whooooaaa Jgod... Check my sig below... you mighta been on top of that trash heap once upon a time, but last year was the Gainesville Ubuntu's (one and only :P) chance to shine!

That said, thanks for the feedback, I guess I just needed someone else to validate the deal. This GM and I make a deal every year --- 2 years back I got Votto for Zimmerman (and junk), last year Hamels for Scherzer (and junk)... I'm just nervous my streak might end  ;D

Thanks...!

Miggy is 3B-eligible so he can play there and oddly enough Hosmer looks to be OF-eligible in a week or 2 b/c KC has been playing him there in NL parks during interleague and Butler at 1B... He needs 3 more starts in 6 NL-park games...

Moranis, I'll probably keep:

Miggy, Pedroia, Hamels, Hosmer, and 1 of R.Zimmerman, Wainwright, Ortiz or Victorino.

(Was gonna keep Miggy, Pedroia, Hamels,JUpton and 1 of Wainwright, Ortiz or Victorino.)

Basically I'm taking a hit in my 4th keeper (Jupton --> Hosmer) to upgrade/buoy my SP this season (and buy low on Zimmerman).

AH! that's right - that was my other league i won last year bwahahaha.  OK, coming from a FORMER CB champ...

I'd take the hit to improve your squad this year.  That trade makes you very deep, and allows you to hedge your bets against injury (the Lowrie/Furcal/Utley group is suspect in that regard).  You can also parlay a couple of those new guys into another deal should you find that you want to upgrade that pitching staff.

Your retooled outfield of Victorino/Swisher/Craig/Hosmer will get the job done replacing Upton.

Understandable Jgod...  ;)

Swisher's been brutal after a hot start.

Sadly there are few trades in this league, so this + and FA pickups would be it, but I *know* i'm not winning with my current roster... the deal seems to be a shot at winning --- with a pretty minimal downside.

Haha, my indecision might have helped --- the GM pulled his offer of

Quote
GIVE: Justin Upton, Rafael Furcal, Chase Utley
GET: Eric Hosmer, Ryan Zimmerman, Allen Craig, James McDonald

and sent:

GIVE: Justin Upton, Rafael Furcal, Chase Utley, Cameron Maybin, Jarrod Parker
GET: Eric Hosmer, Ryan Zimmerman, Allen Craig, James McDonald

gotta do this I think
