I've been trying to come up with a list of who might be the top NBA players to build around.

I don't think it's as easy as it may seem.  Obviously, the first thing to consider is talent and level of play, but the other factors, for me, are age, upside, proven performance, injury history, durability, and mental toughness and leadership.

Anyway, here's mine (definitely, subject to change):

1.  Lebron James
2.  Kevin Durant  (I think these first two are fairly objectively hard to argue.  Who knows, they may be flip floppable, though, after these finals.)

This is where it starts to get harder:

3.  Rajon Rondo
4.  Dwight Howard
5.  Derrick Rose
6.  Chris Paul
7.  Kevin Love
8.  Dwayne Wade
9.  Russell Westbrook
10..  Deron Williams
11.  Blake Griffin
12.  LaMarcus Aldridge
13.  Tony Parker
14.  Kyrie Irving
15.  Ricky Rubio
16,  Marc Gasol
17.  Marcin Gortat
18.  Roy Hibbert
19.  Greg Monroe
20.  Danilo Galinari
21.  Rudy Gay

I'll stop there.  Now I'm just rambling.  I meant for this to be a top ten, but that was just too difficult so it turned into a top 21.  I don't have any approaching their mid 30s or beyond stars on the list for obvious reasons.

Did I miss anyone glaring?  Does anyone have huge issues with my list?  Let me know.

After that, they are pieces to put together.  Get the right pieces together, compete for titles.

I like the list but Rondo over Dwight doesn't make sense to me.

Top Tier = LeBron, Wade, Durant and Dwight

Second tier = the point guards. Melo. Maybe Harden.

Third tier = Rudy Gay, Tony Parker, Chris Bosh, LaMarcus Aldridge, most of the other high level bigs ... those types.

Ignoring the likes of Kobe and Dirk due to age.

I just don't think Wade belongs in the same conversation as the other ELITE players in the game anymore. I would laugh off a Wade for Rondo trade. He belongs somewhere in the mid-second tier after Rondo, Rose, and CP3.

To the OP, not a bad list, but I question your 17-21 selections, with the possible exception of Hibbert [Gortat??].

I think I'd have a fairly easy time arguing that Rondo (17/7/12) had a better postseason than CP3 (18/5/8). Over the last 4 years Paul's been 19/5/10, Rondo's been 16/7/10.

Thanks for the responses, guys.  I disagree with a couple of you putting Wade in that top tier along with James and Durant.  He was the fourth best individual player in that ECF series that just ended.  Add to that, that he's already 30 and has a pretty checkered health record.  If I'm looking to build a team, I definitely take Rondo over him.

I get the Howard hype, but I have some question marks about him as well.  As dominant as he can be, he still hasn't learned to use his physical advantage and insane athleticism to acquire any elite level offensive post moves.  Add to that, I just don't think he's a very intelligent guy.  He's a little flaky.  I know that all superstars have their issues, but at least with someone like Rondo, the question is never about his intelligence.

I know that Chris Paul has an excuse for disappearing in these past playoffs.  He was hurt.  I'm sure it was a legitimate excuse, but I find it increasingly more likely that he'll continue to wear down physically due to those surgically repaired knees.  He'll still be a very good player, but I see him developing more of a Chauncey Billups type old man game as his NBA career moves forward.

We'll see where Derrick Rose lands on that list once he recovers from his surgery.

I guess my main point here is that beyond Lebron James and Kevin Durant there really aren't any other players out there that are head and shoulders above everyone else in that top 5 to 10 category.  There are a lot of good to great players with a variety of flaws and question marks.  Rondo is, I think--by any objective measure--right in the thick of that group.

I could simply be the most biased, green-tinted glasses wearing homer ever.  Or, we ought to keep Rajon Rondo, who is young, healthy, still improving yet a proven big game player, hungry, supremely talented, a winner, and dirt cheap at the price.

I think Rondo has closed the gap with chris paul honestly...if he comes back next year hitting those jumpers/free throws like he did this playoffs run then he has IMO

Paul is the better player.

In this year's playoffs, he really wasn't. Over the last 7 games, neither was Wade.

I could only name PGs and Cs for a list like this. Durant is easily the best player in the league in my opinion but I don't feel like the team is built around him. I don't think the Thunder are really built around any one or two players, to be honest. Ibaka and Perkins' defense is just as good as Durant and Westbrooks' offense.
I would say guys like CP3 and Rondo would be the best to build around. Maybe Dwight Howard if he wasn't such a chucklehead.

Can't we just bring Gerald Green back?

Agreed on Rondo and you also have to look at their contracts (Rondo makes 6 mill less a year, that's quite significant considering they average about the same numbers and Rondo is better in the playoffs).

CP3 might be better overall but Rondo has more fire to me and IMO is the best actual point guard in the league.  What Paul brings that he doesn't is jump shooting. Rondo has really seemed to have gotten better in that area too. I think Rondo is a better leader.

Rondo also has less injury history and is younger.  I know he's my PG, but really being as objective as possible, I'd build around Rondo.

I'd slot Rondo after Rose and before Wade who's on the wrong side of 30.

I'd slot him before Rose and Paul as well who are on the wrong side of bad knees.  Howard's on the wrong side of a bad back and a bad attitude.  I might slot him ahead of Dwight as well.
