If you claim him off waivers then you take on the 18$ million owed? Because if that is the case, its guaranteed no team in the NBA will claim him, there is absolutely no way someone claims Brand for 18$ mil...I mean even with all the terrible GM's employed currently in the NBA, there is no freaking way...
No, nobody will take him on for $18 mil. What happens is that teams bid what they would pay for him. He goes to the highest bidder and Philly has to pay him the difference between the high bid and the contract salary, though it won't count against Philly's cap.
By the way, thanks to an arbitration ruling a few weeks ago, players who are waived by amnesty but picked up by another team in the bid process retain their Bird rights. So, for example, the Clippers resigned Billups, whom they claimed off amnesty waivers, using a Bird exception instead of having to use the midlevel, cap space or another exception. Whoever claims Brand will have the same rights after the season.
Philly is going to use the amnesty clause on Brand so that it can sign Nick Young to a 1 yr, 6 million dollar contract.
I wonder who will go after Brand, as he has just 1 year left.
I think somebody will put in a bid of a couple mil to try to pick him up. Makes sense for Indiana, as mentioned before, especially if they let Hibbert walk. They could reasonably bid $2-3 million. It does make sense for Boston to consider using the biannual exception amount in a bid - one year, low risk, low money, potentially very good reward. Don't see too many other guys I'd rather get with that money (don't think you could get Camby for the biannual). If Chicago decides not to match Houston's offer to Asik, it makes sense there too to grab a fourth big, especially with Boozer as somebody they want to get rid of and/or Gibson potentially forming the basis for a trade to bring back a better weapon. The Clippers could potentially try to bring Brand back as a fourth big behind Jordan, Griffin and Odom, or even have him to make it more realistic for them to offer up Jordan and Griffin in a trade for Howard. San Antonio has shown an ability to use big veterans. New York might be interested with Amare's injury history. In the end, I think he'll get picked up for somewhere between the biannual exception and $3.1 million.
