So...do we have cap space? I feel like I should know this, but i honetly have no idea.

Not if we are planning on using the MLE.

No we don't, not until Ray and some other cap holds get resolved.

We could get some cap room.

Could we?  I'm not breaking out the calculator, but at the start of the off-season we had around $25 million in space.

From that, we have:

-$11 million (KG)
-$6 million (Bass)
-$5 million (Terry)
-$8 (??) million (Green)

That alone puts us over the cap, without even considering Ray, I believe.  (Again, this is going from memory, rather than adding contracts.)

Dude is a proven 10-10 guy at this point and we could really use him. I mean, for the cheap price, why the hell not? Does Ray signing with Heat mean cap space will be freed to bid more on Brand?

Ray shouldn't affect things either way.  We're going to be over the cap, I think, unless something breaks down with Jeff Green.

Yeah, with KG and Bass re-upping, and Green likely not far behind, we've blown through any potential cap space.

I suppose, if you wanted to get cute none of those contracts have officially been signed.  If you REALLY wanted Brand (if this was, say...  Dwight Howard being amnestied), you could walk away from your agreements, renounce our Bird rights to our guys, and create cap space.  You'd never do that because no agent would ever want to deal with the team again, but it seems like it would TECHNICALLY be possible since everything is still unofficial at this point.

We'd have to pass on Green/Ray, those are the cap holds I meant really.

I don't think we'd have any space even without Green, once you factor in cap holds for the draft picks and the open roster spots.  You'd also have to renounce Ray's Bird rights and give up all hope (essentially) of re-signing him.

I think Indiana might grab him, especially if they let Hibbert go.

Or Dallas.

The good news is teams under the Cap have first right of refusal on him. So he shouldn't end up with an elite contender.

Yeah some team will bid, he's too useful for a one year smallish bid.

What about San Antonio?

Am I reading this right?  Is Philadelphia really going to pay Elton Brand 18 million not to play for them so that they can sign Nick Young?

Option A - $18 million for Elton Brand
Option B - $24 million for Nick Young ($18 million to cut Brand and $6 million to sign Young)

And they went with Option B?  What?

I know Elton isn't what he used to be and is not worth $18 million . . . but they have to pay it anyway and Nick Young is not an upgrade.

This was about bringing Hawes back too.

Hawes was on their team last year. They actually even signed him for less than what his cap hold was.  They still could've brought back Hawes.

You can go over the cap to sign your own free agents.  Actually called the Larry Bird rule.
