Alonzo Gee has very quietly become a hot name in NBA free agency circles. There have been two separate reports linking the Phoenix Suns to the unrestricted free agent. A four-year $16 million contract offer was being mentioned.  FoxSports is now reporting that the Boston Celtics, Houston Rockets and Washington Wizards are also showing interest.

Anyone heard anything else about this? And what do you think of Gee?

Haven't seen too much of Gee. Strong and athletic player, if I remember correctly.

At four years, $4 mil a year, I'd rather let someone else have him.

Based on what I saw when he played against the C's, he'd be good off the bench.  An athletic young guard that seems to do a lot of everything decently but nothing spectacular.  I wouldn't object to signing him but not at the reported price tag though.

I really like Gee plays good defense, rebounds and really could get out on the break and run with Rondo.

I'm ok with 3-4 MM per but only if it's one or two years.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

He is going to get overpaid on a long term contract this summer. Stay well away.

  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
Love it as long as we don't overpay.

Very athletic, solid defender, high motor. He can run with Rondo and it'll be fun to watch. He can defend 2 guards or SF's.

No more than 5-6 mil a year though. 6 would be a bit overpaying already.

Yeah, like many medium level FAs we'll likely hear about given the C's likely cap space its all about price and length.

I'd argue that if you took the position that any player worth $4m/year is not worth four years, you wouldn't be very far from wrong.

If there is legitimate interest in a SF like Gee, I suggest that means that Jeff Green coming back is less likely than some suppose.

I think Danny will be "interested" in a lot of players especially since they only have a few signed for next year right now.  Part of it will be smoke and mirrors and others they will be serious about.  That goes for the draft also...

This. It is a GM's job to be interested in any basketball player with talent that could potentially help his team currently or in the future. I dont read too much into this type of thing.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Gee, really? If we sign any player for more than the minimum for multiple years this offseason, then he better have star potential. This had better not affect signing Green and Garnett.

If Ainge uses smoke and mirrors to suggest that he is interested in some free agent SFs, does that make teams picking just behind the Celtics more or less interested in trading up to draft a SF?  If you were in their position, would you think that Ainge is more likely to draft a SF you want because he is looking to fill the need for a Pierce backup by any means necessary or would you interpret Ainge exploring the free agent market as him wanting a backup for Pierce who doesn't need to be developed so that the Celtics will be more likely to target bigs in the draft and you don't need to trade up to get the guy you want?

Or is it an attempt to drive down Green's price by demonstrating that Ainge has other options for a backup 3?
