It is indeed laughable to assert that last night's game was "fairly reffed," and you can't base any analysis of any game off a boxscore. Most of it tells you about the same amount of information as sabremetrics: nothing.
What was beyond obvious was this: The officials were intent on influencing momentum in the game in the first three quarters, which they did adroitly with the wildly uneven application of technical fouls - the David Stern playbook.
Meanwhile, there were numerous incidents that should have been T'd, as established by the quick whistles earlier: James taunting, Spolestra running wildly down the sidelines, James screaming at an official after a foul call.
When I was on the bench, I considered it my responsibility to make sure what happened last night didn't continue, so this thing is on Doc.
Many is the time I told an official, "Even it out or I'm going to publicly embarrass you." And there were two occasions where I'd just had enough, and I chased an official to center court to berate him, knowing full well I was going to get tossed but knowing full well how that kind of a demonstration embarrasses an official - particularly in this league where significant doubts already exist about the honesty of the officiating.
Doc failed his team last night. He should have gone after Ed Malloy and sent a clear message to the league that this Miami-is-predetermined-to-win crap isn't going to be tolerated quietly. Good for Doc for taking it to the press, fine or whatever notwithstanding. But make sure in-game that you're done with the officials, Doc.
We played poorly for three quarters last night. But don't tell me that game was evenly officiated. That's absurd.
