It all depends on who's coming your way and if it'll help the outcome of that game. If you're getting blown out by 25 in the fourth quarter, there is no need to take the charge IMO.

There are times when the game is within a bucket that you have to do whatever it takes to win, that's when you take a charge. Helping your team win the game is all the matters.
Except that when you take the charge, that's all you're doing.  It makes sense for a Fisher, but not a Kobe, as Kobe is actually capable of making a defensive play.

Maybe some guys just aren't good at it either. 

I remember trying to take a charge in college.  I cut off a guy's baseline drive, established position, then took a knee in the nuts for the foul.  Unfortunately the ref called the foul on me and everyone in the crowd got a great kick out of me doubled over in that unique sort of agony.

Ahhh...the memories.

Since about 9 in 10 "taking of charges" are flops anymore...I don't see potentially injuring yourself to bait a ref either sportsmanlike or smart.
