Our MVP, Kevin Garnett, carried us on our backs in that game. Bottom line end of story.
KG had a great game. Rondo didn't have his best. But Rondo changed the complexion of the game in the second quarter, with 8 points and 4 assists, forced a couple of turnovers and held 6'9 Marvin Williams (11 points before that) scoreless when he was guarding him. Again, KG played great and Rondo didn't play his best, but Rondo carried us on his back from a 5 point deficit to a lead as high as 10 points. We don't win the game without that stretch.
Rondo did have a couple great stretches no doubt and was hitting jump shots. He also had 5 turnovers against only 8 assists. Rondo wasn't even in the game during the start of the 2nd quarter. He came back in when the Celtics were already up 5 points. For the rest of the half when he played the Celtics wound up adding only 1 point to that lead.
In the 4th quarter Boston built a 9 point lead when Rondo was not in the game. When he re entered the Hawks immediately went on a 12-2 run to take the lead with just over 3 minutes left. The C's had several chances to put the game way right there and couldn't do it. Rondo had zero points in the 4th quarter also.
In Game 5 and again tonight the Celtics offense floundered in crunch time. Rondo appeared hesistant to drive and threw up a terrible layup then panicked when he was inside the next time and turned it over.
Fully agree that the Celtics would not have won this series without Rondo. To say that he changed the complexion of the game for more than a few minute stretch is a bit much though...
