I don't ever remember guys in their mid 30s, on the same team, being this relevant, this productive, this good...ever.

Win or lose, is this unprecedented? (consider last year as well, with Ray included)

Jordan and Pippen and Rodman. The Celtics, however, are special. Truly special.

Seeing Pierce play this way makes me a little sad that he had to go through those years of complete mediocrity in the Celtics' production before finally being aligned with KG, Allen and Rondo.

I mean, come on, of course not. The NBA has long had teams in their 30's be dominant. The Jazz with Stockton and Malone, The Rockets of 94-95, last years Mavs (Dirk, Kidd, et al), Kobe is mid-30's and Pau ain't a youngin', the last Bulls championship with Jordan and Pippen, 67-68 C's with mid-30's Russ and Sam Jones, Duncan and Manu, etc etc

ETA: Don't get me wrong, I love this team, and loved watching the great performance in Game 2, and going forward (and I think a look at my posts will show I have been nothing but positive about this assembled team and disapproving of all the blow it uppers,  but a little history and perspective please

As far as old superstars are concerned tonight's games had some significance.  According to Hollinger, it's the first time two players age 33 or older have scored 35 points or more on the same day in the NBA playoffs.

Have players in their thirties ever won a game in the first round...  ::)

But yes. Tonight's game was good. Let's not get complacent. Let's not Tebow at mid court after one win.

Last night they were good, game before not so much.   Let's hope we see more of the former.

I know Baylor retired early on but the '71-'72 Lakers still had West and Chamberlain.  Goodrich was their leading scorer, though.

They won the title.

  • Another undersized Celtic...
Seeing Pierce play this way makes me a little sad that he had to go through those years of complete mediocrity in the Celtics' production before finally being aligned with KG, Allen and Rondo.
Agree, but if he hadn't gone through those lean years and had time to mature before they go here, they may not have been able to play together. We forget how "Bad Rondo-like" Pierce was when he was 26...

This is true.  And how  he fought against adjusting  to Doc's system...almost Howardish,  ;)

1969 Celtics' championship team

Bill Russell 34
Sam Jones 35
Bailey Howell 32

They played 46% of the regular season minutes and 48% of the playoff minutes.
Of course, Russell, the greatest of the greatest, averaged 46 MPG in the playoffs.
And when you adjust for different eras training and nutritional habits, Russell and Jones are quite impressive with their performances that year.

OK I got a little carried away after that win.  A lot carried away. I love watching these guys, though.

The 2012 Spurs.
Parker still has 2 weeks until he turns 30.

Hard to believe Manu is almost 35. Jackson is a year younger, Duncan a year older.

What is crazy is that Splitter and Neal are both 27, despite being only second year players.
