Flopping in the NBA is out of control

Flopping is unsportsmanlike conduct, and should be treated as such; make it a technical foul.

The refs are never going to call every single flop as a T, but just that threat that a flopped MIGHT get T'ed up should be a deterrent for the most egregious abusers.  If the refs just call the most obvious ones, then I'd expect you'd see a big improvement.

Plus, it's a simple, I think obvious, fix.  See if that solved the problem enough (it's never going to be perfect) before devising any more complicated solutions.

Hockey already tried this, they came up with a Diving penalty.

It rarely gets called and has not stopped players and even teams (i.e. Montreal Canadiens) from employing the flop when necessary.

I do like the suggestions of calling less anticipatory/reactionary fouls, but if you try to get the refs to go too far with it you're going to get the scorers of the world worked up and hence more technicals/suspensions for marquee players.  Just fine the guys that take flopping too far, make it hurt where it counts...

Difference in hockey is the refs stop calling ticky tack fouls in the playoffs and teams knock it off for the most part. some guys still do it, but in general the refs hold off on calling a penalty unless they see it clean.

also, you can self police it a bit in hockey. floppers get this treatment.

In basketball it just gets worse come playoff time and the ref's still call it.

Watching Game 4 of the Lakers/Nuggets playoff series now.

Game was tied at 86 with about a minute left.  To me it looked like Gallinari flopped twice on two different possessions in the last minute, and both times there was no call, but the Lakers ended up hitting 3 pointers both time, and went up 92-86, winning the game 92-88.

I think those two flops by Gallinari definitely hurt the Nuggets, and may have been what caused them to lose .

Let them play 5-on-4, best way to curb flopping.

I say Technical is the way to go.

The way I look at it is players would still flop for calls during the playoffs where the win is all that matters even if they were fined at a later date.

However, if flopping could lead to a potential free point AND possession of the ball, nobody is going to risk being 'that guy' at the end of a playoff game.

TP.  If the league wants to curb flopping, stop letting players get away with it.  Good job by the refs in that Denver/LA game.  Maybe in the future, Gallo will try to stay strong on defense instead of flopping.

The worst part of this sequence was that Cunningham gets a T for his troubles. Same thing with the Reggie Evans flagrant foul. If the refs cannot penalize floppers fine. But for goodness sake stop punishing victims of floppers and innocent bystanders.
