John Schuhmann:

Curious to see what happens w/ Hickson. A lot of teams could claim him w/ cap space or a trade exception worth $2.4M or more.

Celtics have neither the cap space nor a TE that size. I'm skeptical he'll pass waivers.

yea true, [dang], he probably wants to join a contender anyways .

Could not be worse than JO.

Hickson probably wants to play.  O'Neal doesn't.

According to the ESPN Trade Checker:

1. Teams that have a TE large enough to take Hickson:

Charlotte, Milwaukee, Orlando, Philly, Dallas, Golden State, LA Clippers, LA Lakers, Utah

2. Teams with enough cap space to absorb Hickson's salary:

Cleveland*, Indiana, Toronto

*not sure on the timing, but Hickson may not be eligible to return to Cleveland until next season (Cavs-Kings trade sent Hickson to Sacramento)

Probably Lakers absorb him with their leftover TE.

why do we need TE? if his contract was brought out he is now free agent and can sign with anyone regardless of cup issues.
am i right?

A team can claim a waived player only if one of the following is true:

The team is far enough under the salary cap to fit the player's entire salary.
The team has a Disabled Player exception for at least the player's salary (see question number 19).
The team has a Traded Player exception for at least the player's salary (see question number 72).
The player's contract is for one or two seasons and he is paid the minimum salary.

How many of those teams have the roster space, though?

Yes, and a buyout is actually technically waving someone, then, if they clear wavers, the team pays the player the "buyout" agreed upon amount.

I'm sure any of those teams could find a player to release, if they really wanted Hickson.

Right, the point is that they have to clear waivers before they can choose where they want to go.

That's what I was thinking. He's a free agent, doesn't have to clear waivers, can sign w/anyone for any amount.

You're not a free agent until you clear waivers.

I don't think that the Lakers will be interested.  They already picked up Hill and they don't want to pick up any more salary.  Being over the Cap they would have to pay double his whole year's salary (from a Luxury Tax stanpoint) to sign him....
