He should have taken the offer in Chicago when he had the chance. Too bad, I like him, not sure he's a coach who wins you a tittle but seems like a nice guy.

Good decision. Not the right team for him. Besides Sloan and Jackson:

Mike Fratello
Jeff Van Gundy
Jim O'Brien

or an accomplished assistant like Phil Johnson or Brian Shaw.

I'd actually prefer a no-nonsense defense first coach like JVG/Fratello/JOB if I were the Knicks.

Not the right team for anyone.  An disastrous contract in Amare and an absolute ball hog in Anthony.  A defensive coach?  That team isn't built for defense. It's a mess put together by management that D'Antomi didn't want and D'Antoni took the fall for.

Amare's contract doesn't play and Anthony is good enough to have the ball. He lead a team to the Conference finals and it can be argued he was a proper inbounds pass away from the Finals.

A team with Tyson Chandler, Fields and Shumpert is built to be good defensively. And they are.

Right now, the Knicks are a top-10 defensive squad in the league and they've missed Chandler quite a few games (they become a below average defensive team without him). With one of those coaches, there's no reason why they can't be top-5. Melo can play good defense and Amare can be passable. They jut need a coach that emphasizes defense and take advantages of Anthony's strengths offensively. Having Melo on the roster to have him on the corner spacing the floor for Jeremy Lin to run a top pick'n'roll is absurd .

Not unexpected that he's out, but I wonder if he really resigned - I think resigning means you don't get paid, but you do if you're fired.

If he did voluntarily resign, that's actually a pretty classy thing to do.  Seems like a nice guy albeit not a great coach.  Wonder if we could get him here as an assistant to work out some new offensive sets?
He didn't have anymore years on his contract, so I think he really resigned.

My guess is that he was told he was done in NY barring a ECF or something crazy like that and didn't want to be a lame duck coach.

All reports say the separation was mutual, but I doubt it with all the news on Melo coming out.

More self inflicted wounds coming out of Madison Square Garden.

Let's keep it interesting and see if Isiah is getting bored at FIU. Maybe a return to the Knicks bench.

They started the season advertising the NBA's next Big Three...more like Big Top Circus.

Wow...didn't see THIS coming..I've always chided him for his teams lacking defensively, but I thought he was one of the better coaches out there.

This just LOOKS bad..I'm not blaming Melo here, but it just LOOKS bad..he's out, and NY is winning...then Amar'e returns, and NY still continues to win...THEN MELO returns, and THIS happens, along with a losing streak.

Just speculation from a fan here, but I just don't believe it's the coach.

I'm not sure that whoever comes in next will be able to utilize Lin to his best abilitiies. The man isn't a superstar, yet, but he certainly has shown flashes.

I hope Lin is ok with all this going on.

Meh, D'Antoni was an overrated couch to begin with. He only did well in Phoenix because of how brilliant Steve Nash is.

I honestly don't understand the praise for his offensive system. "Ooh, run a high pick and roll with a point guard and a big man!" Yeah, that's REAL innovative and original.  ::)

Mostly Melo's fault really. When he was gone they were a much better TEAM.  Notice the emphasis on TEAM.

Carmelo is now a coach killer.

What a clown

D'Antoni didn't need much help. His finesse style doesn't work in the long run.

Here's the roster he took to the Western Conference Finals -

Mike D'Antoni has resigned as New York Knicks coach, a source tells Y! Sports.

here come sloan or phil jackson next year....

phil jackson will not coach a team unless it has a bevy of good players who can mesh as a team. the knicks do not have that.

they have a big man who will not/cannot play defense in any acceptable fashion.

they have a talented sf who demands the ball far too often and seems to be a bad influence in the locker room.

a flawed, but popular point guard.

and some other players, some of whom are ok, many of whom are not.

jackson would be willing to coach chicago or miami, but not many other teams i think.

why should he suffer through a team with stars who do not play well together or within a team structure?

EDIT: and i looked quickly at the knicks payroll and it isnt pretty. lots of money tied up for a while, so any GM will have a challenge trying to change this roster.

Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.
