All of this makes we wonder if NJ would even do a trade now.  Maybe they just say to themselves "he's coming here anyways, why should we trade for him?".

Because they might yet lose Dwight + Deron to the Dirk-led Dallas Mavericks in free agency

Or to some other team who manages to convince Orlando to trade Dwight Howard prior to the deadline

This is true.

OR

Howard could be working behind the scenes and telling DWill he's coming, so "tell management not to trade for me".

A win/win for the Magic and Knicks at this point would be a trade involving Melo, Chandler for Dwight + short term filler contract. Even if it's a rental the Knicks need to get out of Melo. He kills their offense, the teams been terrible since his return and now he's fighting with the coach. Plus, for Dwight, the allure of Manhatten, Amare, Lin and cap space might be enticing enough for him to at least pick up that option year.

Otis Smith is a horrible GM.

Its simple. Either your superstar signs an extension, or you trade him.

Simple.

Otherwise you let him walk for absolutely nothing. Did GM's learn nothing from Cleveland?

Sign Extention or we Trade you. Should be posted on every players locker.

When a player doesent sign an extention, it means he doesent want to play there anymore and wants to sign somewhere else over the off-season. Whens the last time a player didnt sign an extention, and then stayed with that team? I dont recall one in recent memory.

We did it with Perkins last year, and hes a scrub compared to Howard.

Magic can get a star back in return, but knowing Otis Smith, he wont trade him and will get zero.
