Bulls exploring avenues to try to trade for Lakers' Pau Gasol, sources close to situation say. Story going up now at ESPN online

So what's the dilly? Noah? Boozer? A lesser asset + Asik?

This trade works:

http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=7k6mo6t

Chicago Trades: Boozer, Asik, Watson
Lakers trade: Gasol

Lakers get what they want (depth, PG), Bulls get Gasol.

Trading Noah would allow the Bulls to move Boozer to the center position, which could help out Chicago as Boozer is an above average defender against centers.

Not sure about the fit for the Lakers, but they have a pretty incompetent front office so who knows?

In one on one defense he might be, but his help defense would be even worse at the C position. No length or discipline to be the backbone of a defense.

Gasol would end up playing all the closing minutes at C if Boozer stays.

Man that would make the Bulls starting lineup strong.  I'm not sure that the Lakers would do that trade though.  They wanted salary relief as well as a couple of young players for Gasol and Boozer gives them neither really.  Also, I'm not sure that Watson is the upgrade they're looking for at PG...

Sounds like LA doesn't want Boozer and would prefer a more dynamic PG than Watson if they're going to give up Gasol.

Who is willing to give up value (in a straight swap or three team deal) for Boozer at this point? Given his age, long term contract and production?

I can't see Chicago being able to put a deal together that only gives up Boozer. They'll need to include a second star like Deng or Noah to make it worthwhile for LA (or any other team selling a high level star player) and at that point it's probably not going to be worthwhile for themselves.

So no deal to be made.

Isn't this what the Bulls do every year?

They put together a contending team of overachievers with great chemistry, but never pull the trigger on a deal to cash in their available assets to land a legit weapon for the championship run, despite all sorts of rumors.

Absolutely agree with this. Boozer has 0 trade value.

That's true. They almost had Kobe, but balked at the last minute.

All the reports at the time was that Kobe balked at the proposed trade that was close, he didn't want the Bulls to give up Deng in addition to all their other pieces.

I don't think you can classify this edition of the Bulls in that way.

They are a top three team in the NBA and a legitimate title contender.

They need some insurance in case Deng's wrist worsens. They also could use a healthy Rip Hamilton.

I have the feeling that they'll stand pat like always, cruise into the playoffs, and wear down during the second round/ECF.

That's a very different situation than being a young talented team who doesn't go all in for an elite player to contend.

They paid Boozer, paid Noah, paid Deng, got Rose, and have collected a bevy of role players. Tinkering your role players is exactly what almost all contenders do rather than making huge moves.
