Man, at first glance this looks like a steal for Orlando. And to speculate, I assume this means that Howard probably told Alex Martins that he'll stay in Orlando if they land Ellis.

I wouldn't assume that.  The Magic are doing everything they can to convince him to stay.  I don't think he is promising anyone anything right now though.

According to reports, Howard wants to play with a star. So if Ellis comes in a trade, I think he'll stay in Orlando and keep many people, including his mother happy. Plus, his relationship with Martins seems very positive. In fact, as time passes I hear more about Martins than I do about Otis Smith.

Well, I think they would have a heck of a lot better chance of keeping him if they made a deal like that.  But I don't think he has any idea what he is going to do this summer, so I don't think he will guarantee anything at this point.

I think he would wait to see how the chemistry works out the rest of the year before deciding anything.

But by making a deal like this, I think they are changing it from maybe a 20% chance Howard would stay to perhaps a 51% chance.  He is still going to be very tempted by other offers, and if things don't gel this season, then it could blow up quickly.  But the Magic can at least go to bed thinking they did everything they could (kind of like the Cavs did).

what's the incentive for Golden State?  Ryan Anderson??

Well, we need to see what the actual deal is, but I think it would be partly Anderson, and partly getting Biedrins off the books.  They also would have a ton of cap space this summer to build around Curry and Lee.

I can't see who NOH takes on in this deal. Wright and Redick seem to either replace or duplicate each other and no way NOH would take on Hedo's terrible contract.

How do they match what's going out in Kaman's contract?

By the way, a shoot first SG in a PG's body is not the best player to team with Howard. If Anderson and Redick both go in this deal, teams will double down on Howard without the shooters to space the floor and actually make his life a lot more difficult.

Ryan Anderson and JJ Redick paired with Steph Curry make for possibly the best shooting triumvirate in the NBA. Im not sure how that will translate into wins but they will shoot the lights out. This trade particularly makes sense if Turkalou and a asset are sent to a third team as a salary dump and not to GS. They would clear cap room and shift towards building around Curry.

Actually, my guess is the Anderson is going to NOH, and a pick is going to Golden State.  Anderson is not a very good fit with Lee, but he could be an interesting pick up for the Hornets.

I don't see how both New Orleans and the Warriors could be happy with this proposed trade. Only New Orleans has valuable enough draft picks to make it worth GSW while and why would they give them up when they're already in full on rebuild mode?

Who's this writer? Never heard of him before.

This is a terrible trade for Golden State.

Depends what they end up with.  If they can use Ellis to turn Biedrins (who has quietly became the worst contract in the league) into expiring deals and an asset like RAnderson, its a solid deal, and should put them in a better position going forward.

Especially if they can flip David Lee into something/body they really need.

EDIT: Especially since GSW owes their 2012 FRP to Utah, and its Top-7 protected. They're currently #6 in the lotto.

The incentive for Golden State is they get to say they've made a trade and they totally have been dying to make one for like forever.

Else wise, I haven't the least idea.

Didn't think about that.  I was thinking they would flip RAnderson, but I could definitely see them keep him, and move Lee.  There are plenty of teams that could use a pick and roll PF, so he should bring good value, if they are determined to essentially start over.

Another incentive:

Finally gives Golden State the pieces to focus on that defense that Mark Jackson keeps talking about (but not scheming for).

Start over and help guarantee their top-5 position in a stacked draft.

Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Ekpe Udoh (I'm not even trying to get that right), Ryan Anderson and one of Drummond, Sullinger, or Barnes ain't all bad.

And crap, in the ultimate slap in the face to Otis Smith, they should take Barnes and sign Dwight Howard in the offseason.

It kinda is? I'm not going to pretend like I have any idea how to project those rookies but you're suggested start-over plan is:

Steph Curry who can't stay healthy, Klay Thompson whose a nice rookie with a limited ceiling, Epke Udoh whose shown flashes of greatness without any degree of consistency and Ryan Anderson who I like as a poor man's Kevin Love.

Golden State probably needs to do something, but I think there's much more surefire ways of starting over than this.
