I'm hoping JO's contract can yield us some kind of help.  Lamar Odom is the only semi-realistic target I can think of.

If no one's willing to offer a rotation quality player for our expiring contracts, then I'd look to dump them or waive them and try to bring in a decent yield from the inevitable post-deadline buyout pile.  Boris Diaw is my preferred addition.

I would even entertain a swap of some of those expiring contracts for Diaw. Don't wait for him to negotiate a buyout with Charlotte, lock him in via trade.

Why does Charlotte do that then? They'd save money in a Diaw buyout, conceivably.

So then the C's are going to send 9 million worth of expirings, plus extra cash to offset the buyout?

Just seems like a lot of Cash-money for a guy that's not gonna get us over the hump.

If there's value to be had for a guy like Ray Allen, I'd like to get it.

The only way I see the C's making any kind of run in the playoffs would require a substantial improvement at the 5 spot - and there's no way of doing that without huge cost, huge costs that I don't think Danny will be willing to pay.  I don't think he'd trade for Okafor, for example - he's set up all of these expiring contracts for a reason, and it's not so he can trade for Okafor!

So, given that I don't see us as any more than one-and-done, I'd rather start accumulating picks/young guys.  I don't see Ray Allen re-signing this offseason, anyway - he'll go sign a contract with Chicago, or Indiana, or some other contender.

I am hoping for Danny to commit fully to one direction and either find a way to get the team a major upgrade that gives them a legitimate chance at making some noise in the playoffs or kick-start the rebuilding process by selling off players for future assets. However, I don't expect either one to happen.

I do expect Danny to make one or two small trades. Marginal upgrades. Treading water.

Celtics could send JO, Quis, and Sasha, representing a $1 million reduction in payroll for the Cats, plus cash. (If Steimsma and Moore, even more savings for Charlotte.)

Wouldn't that be greater savings than paying 50 cents on the dollar for whatever's left on Diaw's contract?

Only problem with that is Charlotte's at the roster limit.  Can you trade for more players than you can retain?

I don't know about any actual trades--but can't we have a juicy new Celtics rumor or two here, with less than 72 hours left to the deadline?

If they only paid .50 on the dollar on the money left on Diaw's contract, isn't that better? Diaw's owed 9 million annually IIRC. If you only have to pay him 2 million of the 4 or whatever left you owe him, and then don't have to worry about what to do with 3 guys you never wanted in the first place, seems like a win.

By doing nothing, isn't he committing fully to one direction? Unless somebody offers up a first for Ray, Paul or KG, which seems unlikely, there's no real blow-up move. Nobody is going to give you a young piece for one of those guys. Even if you do get a late-first, like Chicago's, is that even worth it? It'd be nice, but it's probably not going to make much of a difference in the long run. If he does nothing and sits tight, then the roster is going to look much different next year anyways. Unless he can drop Pierce to clear even more cap room, I can't see how he can go further in that direction.
2023 Historical Draft: Toronto Raptors

Point Guard: Anfernee Hardaway, Fat Lever, Terrell Brandon
Shooting Guard: Paul Westphal, Paul Pressey
Small Forward: Marques Johnson, Danny Granger
Power Forward: Jermaine O'Neal, Bobby Jones, Kiki Vandeweghe
Center: Marc Gasol, Serge Ibaka

If we can move Ray for a young big then I'm all for it.  Other than that we have enough vets with expiring deals we should be able to do something.

I don't see Ray Allen re-signing this offseason, anyway - he'll go sign a contract with Chicago, or Indiana, or some other contender.

I think Ray will probably resign.  Either Ainge will pull off some big deal and Ray will come back for very little or Boston will face a more extended rebuilding process, in which case Ainge will probably be willing to pay enough to keep Ray around for a few more years.  With Milwaukee and the now non-existent Seattle already on his resume, I suspect Ray would rather finish his career with the Celtics instead of chasing another ring.

Actually...i'm praying for a trade!
Like this one: Ray for Mayo and a 1st.

Everyone who thinks that we can beat Miami ou Chicago are kidding himselves.

So..trade one of the big 3. Let's get 3 1st round picks in a deep, deep draft. By the way...i watch college hoops and the draft is REALLY deep.

This way we gonna be 7th or 8th seed. Put a galant, brave fight. And, of course, lose in 6 games. BUT. We will have another pick. And a young player to run with Rondo.

Cheers!

The real blow-up move is selling the bench.  Pietrus to Chicago for Jimmy Butler or a draft pick.  Find a way to send Keyon Dooling to the Spurs, who probably want a replacement for the just-retired TJ Ford.  Brandon Bass to the highest bidder, because a lot of teams would like some big man depth.

Those are all more doable than trading Ray Allen or Kevin Garnett if you don't want to take back any salary commitments for next season, which I think is Ainge's goal, though he will take back a player he thinks can be a desirable part of a package for an even better player.

I love the Okafor trade.

I really don't think we're going to get much for any of the Big Three.

The Okafor deal is really the best of both worlds.  It gives us a shot to make one more run and it gives us a pick for the future.  It really doesn't hurt us much either with cap flexibility.

The C's aren't likely to get anyone of value anyway.  If Howard really wanted to come here come July, I'm sure Wyc would amnesty Pierce (or better yet Okafor if that was possible).  But the far more likely scenario is that Okafor doesn't prevent us from doing anything, since we weren't going to get anyone anyway.

As others have said, we then make three picks in this draft, bring back KG and Ray, rebuild while competing, and then either trade Pierce and Okafor with one year left on their deals in 2013 or hold onto both of them to free up cash for 2014 to put players around Rondo and the young talent we've accumulated.

Like this one: Ray for Mayo and a 1st.

Reportedly, Memphis is now interested in keeping Mayo and trying to make a move to shed salary so they can re-sign him without going into the luxury tax.
