From a Gant post on RealGM:

Mannix on Howard: If he's a FA, it's open season

Postby Gant on Mon Mar 12, 2012 11:04 am
Tweets from Chris Mannix, which makes it sound like Howard could end up on any number of teams if he becomes a free agent this summer.:

As nuts as it sounds, rival executives say they believe Orlando will hold onto Howard after the trade deadline. Howard's camp thinks so too.

I'm told Howard prefers going to free agency. Doesn't want a team he is traded to gutted just to get him.

If Howard goes to free agency, throw out the three-team (Dallas, NJ, LAL) list. It's open season for bidding. LeBron, part II.

Two teams sources say tell SI Howard will have interest in: Clippers and Miami. There are cap issues, but the interest is real.

Bulls/Dwight Howard is just not a match. I'm told unequivocally Howard is not interested in signing there.

I know that it's highly unlikely, however, stranger things have happened.

The Heat are one of the few teams that have the assets to trade for him and not totally eviscerate their team.

Howard/Hedo for Wade/Bosh works.

Would/could the Heat ever do this or acquire Howard in any way? That would literally make me sick.

Howard and James running together is not something that I would like to see.

What i prefer to take from the article is that we would have a chance of landing him.

Miami wont trade Wade and Bosh for howard thats absurd and dumb for the Heat. However if they can revolve a package around Bosh that would be the best Orlando might be able to get for Howard and that would make Miami ridiculously scary.

Wade and Bosh for Howard does sound a bit far-fetched. It might be more palatable for the Heat if Ryan Anderson was included.

A Bosh package makes the most sense for the Heat to keep a Howard/James/Wade core together. But hard to see the Magic biting on just Bosh and filler. I think they would rather take their chances and hold onto Howard for the rest of the season and see what happens.

If he enters free agency, could Miami amnesty Bosh and sign Howard? Do they have that financial flexibility?

I know he would WANT to, but what would his possible justification be?

Howard is really just scared of cold weather, wow what a... fruit. Playing with Rose is the ideal situation for him, IMO. I didn't believe it at first, but it really seems to be about good weather and market.

if he was smart hed go to chicago. if winning was most important for howard, then he would play with rose. they could win 3 or 4 rings together when its all said and done

If I'm the Heat, I'd rather trade Wade than Bosh.  Wade is about 3 years older than Bosh and is more brittle.  It also then becomes Lebron's team and the Bosh/Howard tandem would be scary down low.  Anyone that could shoot and run out on a break would be fine at SG on that team (a younger version of Mike Miller for example) and the Chalmers/Cole tandem would be fine at PG.  That team would be unstoppable if healthy.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

I agree with you from the Heat perspective, but the Magic  have to feel the same way we do about Wade's durability, which is why they would want both Bosh and Wade. One of them doesn't get it done.

Also whoever gets Howard in a trade, will most likely have to eat Hedo. To make the salaries match, it almost has to be both Bosh and Wade. Can't see taking Wade and filler (Battier, Miller, etc wouldn't be enough).

If Miami really wants Howard in a trade, which seems like the only way for them to get him and keep him given their salary situation, they gotta pay. What scares me is if they know he wants to come and they just amnesty Bosh next year like the Knicks did to Billups for Chandler, in effect they're just giving up Bosh for Howard. If they can do that, that's scary and may turn me off to the NBA for awhile.

A dynasty for any team other than the Lakers while the C's rebuild is fine with me.  I hope they get him for a Bosh package.  Miami would be crazy not to try.

I agree. As much as I don't want to see James win many rings I REALLY don't want the Lakers to win anymore.
Peace through Tyranny

There's no way, IMO, that DH would go to MIA just to be a 3rd fiddle.

He was cooping already about going to LA and being 2nd fiddle there, behind Kobe.

I'd be absolutely shocked if he goes there, even with the proposed trade of Bosh-DH.

His scoring average would drop from 19 or so per to about 10....his rebounding would stay the same, but I just don't see how he'd be happy in MIA as the third fiddle.

He'd literally have to take a crowbar to Lebron and Wade's hands to just get the ball.

It's funny I think we were saying the same thing about LeBron a couple of years ago.

This tells me two things:

Chicago is in an amazing place right now in terms of roster flexibility.

and

The fact that both Lebron and Dwight seemed to have no interest in joining DRose and the rest of that CHI roster tells me they have no idea what kind of teammates they need to succeed.

I don't see why Bosh for Dwight hasn't already happened, even if it means taking back Turkoglu, Richardson, or both.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

No -- it couldn't happen. Don't worry about it.
