It is mind-boggling. Hickson, Diaw, Turiaf: they all must have been cheap to acquire and we had the contracts/2nd round picks to spare.
This isn't necessarily true.
A buyout saves the team who does it money, the player doesn't get 100% of his remaining contract. Any trade with Boston could convcievably cost such a team money due to how the salary matches worked out, with Boston's only carrot being a 2nd round pick that doesn't have much value.
So a team could have just tried to get Bradley or a first round pick out of Boston because otherwise they'd just do a buyout.
We had enough contracts to make it work, IMHO. Dooling made less than Hickson while still being in the trade range. Ditto for Wilcox and one of our minimum guys for Turiaf. Ditto again for JO and Dooling (or two of our minimum guys) to Charlotte for Diaw.
Throw in some cash, and I think the opposing team could have made out better than a buyout scenario financially, in addition to picking up a 2nd round pick.
I wasn't there so I can't know for sure, but it certainly is frustrating from my viewpoint.
