(Not major news to me, just the first confirmed offer from an NBA executive.)

Bird made this statement on a Jackie MacMullan's piece for ESPN published a couple of days ago. As Larry says there, if this is Ainge's asking price for Ray, then he obviously doesn't want to trade him.

Or, he is asking for an extra asset than he knows he is going to get, weeks before the trade deadline, since there is still plenty of time to negotiate.

Its great to see the Ainge is being aggressive in trade talks and he is not willing to settle. I personally think Allen for Psycho-T + a 1st sounds about right. In addition, it lets teams know that these players are available and sets the bar for the value your looking to get in return.

There is no way the Pacers would do that. If you think that sounds about right then it's a good ting you're not a GM...

So should Danny try to make only moves that are completely even for both teams?

I think it is a bit much but Ainge should start high. But if Wilcox is out for a long time, Ainge will probably start dropping prices.

He isn't going to get a 1st round pick, a decent young player in a rookie contract and a huge trade exception for Ray Allen. It doesn't matter how much time he has to negotiate; not even the entire eternity would be enough to get that kind of return.

If that's the asking price, Ray Allen won't be traded.

I think the talent asking price is about right, the problem is the salary. Hansbrough is on the cheap, if he was making a couple more mil a year, I think Indiana would be okay with it.
do it

I think Ray & Bass for Hansbrough and Indiana's 1st is a fair trade.

Indy gets two vets to mix with their youth - and an assassin in the clutch in Ray. Ray is a difference maker, Hansbrough is not.

Meanwhile, Indy doesn't really need "more" young guys at this point. What they need is vets to mix with a very talented young core of Hibbert, Granger, George and Collison. They are in a win now mode and they are only a couple vet pieces away from being a very, very difficult knock out come playoff time.

You haven't left much on the table for DA to even consider in a trade.  I don't think its out of the realm of possibilities that a playoff team finds enough expiring salaries + a late first round pick to pry away Ray.  The Spurs come to mind as do the Clippers.

If DA gets a pick plus expiring deals, Ray Allen will be gone.

The interesting part of this trade isn't the trade itself, but the type of trade Danny seems to be pursuing.

Hansbrough + a pick means that you're blowing the team up.

If he was asking for... say, Jeff Foster, that would indicate that Danny was trying to salvage this season.

Hansbrough would help this team much more than Jeff Foster would at this point in their careers.
