my bad, I thought Smith was restricted after this year, in that case I would give up both 1sts for him so we can try to lure Dwight, but wouldn't give up much for the other 2 . Atlanta can probably do better than that though .
Both 1sts and Ray for Smith so we can match salaries? Is that what you mean?
First of all, I say there's a 95% chance that Dwight will be off the market in about 5 days. If you're Orlando do you pass up the packages they are being offered in trade when it's obvious Dwight will sign with Brooklyn in the offseason?
But let's assume this isn't true..
If you trade for Smith (without giving up Pierce), you'll have Rondo, Pierce, Smith under contract next year. That leaves you about 12 mil to offer Dwight. Not happening. In the unlikely event he reaches free agency he'll command 18-19 mil in first year salary via sign-and-trade.
Not to mention... you'd have to say GOODBYE to Ray, KG, Jeff Green and Bass in order to have that 12 mil to offer Dwight.
That's an aspect of this that people don’t seem to understand… Technically we will have 25 mil in cap space if we stand pat with our current roster. You can only obtain that 25 mil in cap space if you RENOUNCE THE BIRD RIGHTS to KG, Ray, Jeff Green and Bass. So even if you could “theoretically” spend that 25 mil on a couple guys of the level of Blatche and McGee… you’re basically saying goodbye to KG, Ray, Jeff Green and Bass since the most you could offer them would be the vet minimum.
The benefit of trading for guys like Blatche and McGee now is that you not only will have them on board next year, but you can retain the bird rights to KG, Ray etc and bring the entire gang back next year.
