say we were able to land smith for allen and jo (i proposed a three way with sota where we send out allen and JO receive j smith)
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=76295mf

would a starting 5 of rondo, piteous, pierce, smith and KG make us contenders?
a bench of bradley, bass and wilcox would need augmentation (a better reserve 2)

I think that starting 5 may be the most dominant starting 5 in the league. smoove would instantly improve our rebounding, his high energy d would cause all sorts of fast break opportunities and think of the demoralizing rondo to smith fast break dunks.

I don't think so, but it would make us a lot better. I still don't think we'd be able to beat Miami in a series. Still, I'd do that trade in an instant.

What you describe would be great . . . but I don't think that's at all on the table.

I think getting Smith would at the least require trading KG, and more likely would require trading Pierce and potentially also Ray.

Either way, I don't think this team is a contender with J-Smith but without KG or without Pierce.

Need a capable backup wing. Then yes, it would make Boston a contender.

reportedly the hawks want ray
sota wants rid of beasley
ray and beas and the clips pick may be enough if ATL wants to get under the cap.

Just because ATL wants Ray doesn't mean they'd trade Smith for him, even if you threw in Beasley and a 1st.  That's a total rip-off for them. Smith is a young All-Star caliber big man on a reasonable contract.

Reportedly the Clips want Ray, too.  Doesn't mean they're going to trade Deandre Jordan for him.

Whoever said that? I read that the Hawks GM was "partial to Ray Allen" but he's been like that for a long time. I don't see him moving his best player for an old albeit good winger on the last year of his contract.

This makes sense for all three teams.

Boston gets: (PF)Josh Smith (G) Kirk Hinrich
Atlanta gets:(PF) Brandon Bass,(SG) Ray Allen,(F) Michael Beasley, Celtics 2012 1st round pick.
Minnesota gets: (C) Jermaine O'neal,(SG)J.Stackhouse, Celtics 2012 second round pick or Clippers 2012 1st.

Works in trade machine. Every team gets good value.

maybe wojo ?(was on the front page of CB the other day.)
this would all depend on A: horford likely to return before playoffs
B: hawks want to get under the cap

I think it would really help our chances because now you have the half court game that we have and yet another running mate with Rondo. Pietrus is a capable starting 2 just would have to add another wing player. Maybe another good defender say raja bell for maybe moore and a 2nd rounder. If we had a lineup of

Rondo/Bradley
Pietrus/Bell
Pierce/Bell/Pietrus
Smith/Bass/Wilcox
KG/Wilcox/Steamer

That is a very good team. You have Runners in smith rondo bass wilcox pietrus and bradley. You have half court offense in pierce rondo and KG and the D would be stout. I think it would make it a whole lot more interesting at the least.

This makes sense for all three teams.

Boston gets: (PF)Josh Smith (G) Kirk Hinrich
Atlanta gets:(PF) Brandon Bass,(SG) Ray Allen,(F) Michael Beasley, Celtics 2012 1st round pick.

Works in trade machine. Every team gets good value.

thats reasonable return for the hawks, I think Sota would rather have mcgrady but that still works on the trade machine
we would be pretty short at the 4 but smith plays big minutes, so wilcox steamer and jjj as back up bigs may be enough.
with hinrich backing up the two we could search out another back up big for minimum (is earl barron still available?)

Maybe Ray, Bass and a first for Smith and TMac or Vlad (yuck on Vlad, but still would work). Then if you wanted you could do a JO and a first for Beasley for depth. That gives you a big rotation of KG/Smith/Wilcox/Stemsma/JJJ/(JO or Beas).

Smith is too inconsistent for us to trade any of our guys for him.

no, but it will make us a lot younger and fresh legs to run fast breaks with Rondo...

TO me, Depends on who we are playing.  Against Portland and Miami, NY and MAv's he would be quite useful .

I still wouldn't trade Wilcox or Bass for him , the effort they give at their price is unbeatable. They Like being at Boston. A happy crew makes winning easier.

He'd be a nice addition at a workable price. Still have a worse issue...

We still need a quality Center much worse , somebody at least as good as Lopez to make a push.  He would fit our needs nicely.
