Gimme a break. Youre saying its not unusual and a complete kick in the guts for a player of his quality to be sent to the D-League? The coach is clearly very unhappy with his effort.

Odom doesn't want to be in Dallas. Never did. Add to that fact this is a guy who has in the past suffered from depression and you get a guy who's just gonna go through the motions until this season ends.
Never underestimate the predictability of stupidity...

  • Rondo = Good
I imagine Dallas is using the D-league almost the way that a Major League Baseball team would use a minor league team -- to help a veteran rehab and get back into shape.  I think teams ought to do that more often.

When the mavericks head coach makes a public statement about how the mavericks owner, fans and players want a player to go out there and play hard, and states that Lamar isn't doing that, i think it's obvious that this is about more than just conditioning.

TP for you

This is exactly what I was thinking when I first heard about this.  But I knew some people would over-react, and think ther was more to it than there really is.

I thought they took that out (allowing veterans to go down to the D-League) of the CBA on the final draft.

Good to know that is actually still in there. Good use of that option here too.

1 - Within the frame of the old CBA it wasn't possible to send veteran players to the D-League. That's why it's unusual.

2 - With the new CBA, teams need the agreement of veteran players (+3 years in the league) to send them to the D-League. So Odom had to agree with this. I wouldn't call it a demotion; they're just using the D-League as way to get players back in game form - a good idea.

Does anybody have a link to updated D-League Rules?

15. Are NBA players allowed to rehab injuries in the D-League?

NBA players in their first or second year can rehab injuries in the NBA D-League.

For example, the Denver Nuggets assigned guard Julius Hodge to the Colorado 14ers in December 2006 for a 30-day rehabilitation assignment after suffering a leg injury. More recently, the Cleveland Cavaliers assigned forward Cedric Simmons to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in January 2008 to rehabilitate an ankle injury. .

Quote
NBA Assignments: NBA teams can assign players who are rookies or in their second season to their D-League affiliate. Players can stay with the D-League team for as long as the team wishes, and be recalled back to the NBA at any time. However, a player can only be sent to the D-League a maximum of three times during the season.

Unlimited assignments till 3 years (used to be 2). Veterans can go with consent.

D-League
Hunter's memo Wednesday specified the following D-League rules:

• Players with three years of service or less can be assigned to the D-League. (It was two years' experience in the previous CBA.)

• A player can be assigned to the D-League an unlimited number of times after a limit of three in the previous CBA.

• Players continue to receive their NBA salary while assigned to the D-League. This was also the case under the previous CBA, but ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher reported recently that the league was pushing for players to be paid at D-League salary rates while under assignment.

• Players with more than three years' experience can be assigned to the D-League -- for example, for injury rehabilitation -- but only when the player and the union request the assignment. Under the previous CBA, players with more than two years' experience could not be assigned to the D-League no matter what.
