I keep reading about him being an excellent trade chip and I know he'll probably opt out of next years 4 million, but I would love to see the Celtics resign him.
I wonder what you all think it would cost to keep him and is it worth it?
So far he looks pretty good. He scores, rebounds, plays pretty good D and even blocks some shots. Seem like a good fit here so I'm a little confused why people seem to just throw him into trade ideas like he's a non-factor.

In my opinion, if there's any chance we could involve Bass in a trade that would net us a future first or a young asset locked up on a cheap deal for another year or two, it's worth making that deal.

I like Bass, and I wouldn't mind keeping him around, but the cost of that is going to be around 7-7.5 million a year.  He's worth that, but it's still a steep price to pay a player who is a supporting piece on a good team and not even a key guy on a rebuilding one.

The Clippers really need talented back-up bigs.  If we could squeeze them for a future 1st round pick, I'd say pull the trigger on that for sure.

I think you only trade him if you decide you are blowing it up. Moving him but keeping everyone else doesn't really help that much for the future but really hurts us in the present.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

He costs to much for a rebuilding team.

I think he fits the Doc scheme perfectly and I don't see how Ainge trades him away.  He's worth his contract and his ability to knock down that 15-18 jumper goes a long way in this offense.  I hope they don't get rid of him unless the package is too good to pass up, but I don't see that scenario happening.

Won't the Celtics have his RFA rights if he remains on the roster beyond this season?

If there's no good deal out there, I say hold onto him. See what the market is like during the offseason.

Yeah, most likely.  He's relatively young, though, and he's productive, with a good attitude.  He's a team player and he reportedly likes it here.  Since the team is going to have to spend money on somebody, it could make sense to spend some of that money on Bass.

As long as we don't pay him over his market value (4 yrs / 30 million, I think), he shouldn't be difficult to move later on, if we so choose.

I hope not

Why is that?
I don't want to tie up cap space on such a limited player.

As a backup PF on a contender, I like Bass a lot and would love to keep him long term. In contrast, on a rebuilding team his contract will tie up valuable cap flexibility and make him an impediment to success.

He is a regular FA if he opts out.

That is to much when the team has to get the star players in place.  Bass is the type of player you add after the stars are in place and his skills match up with the stars.

Celtics have to get the stars.  Either through the draft, trade or FA.

Role playing FA should be of the one year to two year variety with low cap numbers.

But aren't you going to have to pay someone? I speak as someone who is cap space challanged, so forgive me, but I think he could be an excellent piece on a rebuilding team.
On a basketball level, why do you say he's a limited player? I mean I know he's not going to lead the league in assists, but he's looked pretty good starting these last few games. Like I said before, he can score, rebound, play D.
I'm just wondering why you think he's limited and who you would get thats better for whatever he would cost? He also seems to fit into the system Doc likes to play.

Like I said above, role playing FA for a team looking for it's stars need to be limited to 1 to 2 year deal with low values.

Bass is likely looking at 4-5 years at a good chunk of change.

Those types of deals clog up a team that needs to find the guys to build around.  (see Detroit with the Gordon/Charlie V signings.)

Yes there's a good chance they will keep him.  If they get the sense that he wants to stay and won't try an dbreak the bank.  There was an article written in the Boston Globe this week on Bass and the Celtics wanting to keep him...
