I did some searching and couldnt find a topic for this. But if there is one and i didnt see it I apologise in advance.

Saw on ESPN that Kidd-Gilchrist said that we wants to stay the 4 years at Kentucky and graduate from there as a senior. However his coach thinks it would be a bad idea.

For a player who is projected to to go top 3 - top 5 in this years draft, do you think it is a wise choice or one he may end up regretting?

IMO im all for the kidd (pun intended) to stay in college, Good to see people still thinking about their educations.

Discuss.

Im a huge UK fan and live close to Lexington, Ky. Gilchrist said that and then an hour later said "he would do what best for him". So I dont think he will be back in UK blue next season. If he does, it will be a shock and I will be thrilled, lol.

Yeh I only heard it today, but I was also shocked, because I have only heard positive things about this kid and how much potential he shows. Either way im sure that he will go with what is best for himself.

Just brings to mind a player like Tim Duncan who by his second year of College was being called one of the most eligible NBA players and stayed the full 4 years.

Either way all the best to him!

I don't really know what to make of this. In one part I'm glad that there are still some athletes who value education first. On the other, for me it's this, if you're a top 5 consensus on every board, you should go.

I think another year in Kentucky might help his overall game. Finishing all four is not really a bad idea, but he has to be consistent because one slumping year could make him from lottery to mid first. But again much respect for Kidd-Gilchrist for choosing to stay in school and commit to be a degree holder. I think staying for all four years, when there are discussions that he can be a top 3 is kind of a "too good to pass" thing. Just me.

I knew about this a week ago.   I live in KY.    Thought it was common knowledge.  Davis and Jones said they are going pro though.

A lot of the recent mocks I've seen have him going more like 9 or 10, still good enough for him to leave this season, but not top 5.

Players say a lot of things during the season when in the heat of the moment that they ultimately don't do.

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson

I'd be shocked if he stayed all 4 - he'd be costing himself millions of dollars to do it, both for the years he'd miss and because (I think) rookie contracts are gonna drop off when the new salary cap kicks in after next season.

A lot of NBA players finish up their degrees while they're playing, and he could easily do that if he's motivated enough.  He also wouldn't be the first guy to say he's staying all 4 then leave early.

It's a great attitude though, and I wouldn't be surprised if he stays one more year, but I think the dollar signs will break him down sooner than later.

I think it's a good idea for him to stay.  He still needs some major offensive work.  Defensively, this kid has the chance to be a stud at the next level right away.  He needs work on his outside shot and his scoring though.  He'll have more of an opportunity to work on it in college.
do it

Its silly to put any stock into this.

He'll still go through the draft process, and he'll get a top 5 guarantee from someone, and he'll be gone.

You can always go back to school when your sports career is over. You cant always get top 5 money.

I think Rondo did it this past summer?

Props to the guy.

you will see alot of these players getting sentimental at this point in the season. After the tournament when the dust settles then the truth will come out. I say he declares.

About that...

Good for us - we've got almost no shot at picking high enough to get him, but he'll push some good players down a bit to wherever we do wind up.

And good for him.  I don't think his stock is going to get any better than it is.  Might as well cash in now.

...and also good for whoever drafts him.  I don't care if he ever becomes a star, he is a player anyone would love to cheer for.

+1

He's going to get drafted high so he should come out. Greg Oden's knee issues should be a dire warning for kids considering staying in college. Can you imagine had he stayed another year, the Blazers would have been saved but Oden would barely seen a few minimum contracts from the NBA.
