Former Portland Trail Blazers guard, Brandon Roy, has thought about returning to the game after retiring prior to the 2011-12 season due to numerous knee injuries, according to ProBasketballTalk.

“It’s the truth. It’s really hard being so far away from the game. I spend time watching Jamal (Crawford) and following all of his games; Will (Conroy) and Tre (Simmons) are both doing their thing, so it’s driving me to wanna come back out there.” Roy told US Basket, “If the treatment I’ve been looking into can work, I believe there’s a good chance you will see Brandon Roy back hoopin’.”

Roy played in just 47 games last year due to knee issues. In 2009-10, he was limited to just 65 games for the Trail Blazers. Once considered one of the games rising stars, Roy ended his career after just six seasons.

Roy was a three-time All-Star, and the 2006-07 Rookie of the Year. Last season he averaged 12.2 points per game, 2.7 assists and 2.6 rebounds. His career average is 19 points per game, 4.7 assists, and 4.3 rebounds.

Not to rain on Lucky's parade (who cleverly picked him up) but I just don't see this ending well. He's probably going to try to use an experimental thing (just guessing).  Oh well. They're his knees I guess.

blood-spinning therapy .... it's been helping out alot of players knees recently deshawn steveson got it, and he said last time his knee felt that great he was 23 years old. so if that's the treatment roy is getting maybe it can help his knee..

I stashed Rubio on my roster for 2+ years; I'm willing to wait on Roy and see what happens.

I'd been meaning to open up a roster slot to pick him up for some time now; the article pushed me to act faster than I would have liked (had to cut a player outright).

Sports medicine is the cutting edge of the field. I would not be surprised to see a medical advance provide Roy exactly what he needs to return to the court within the next 5 years.

Part of me thinks he can come back, but at reduced effectiveness. But he has youth on his side

I forget, did he just retire, or did the Blazers use the amnesty on him?

It could be an interesting scenario if he does return.

Amnestied.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
I'd be on board with signing him to an MLE contract for a few years. Look at grant hill and Shaun Livingston; sometimes reduced effectiveness ain't so bad.

good point....65% of a future Hall of Famer (Grant Hill) was definitely worth the MLE. I don't know about Livingston at MLE, but he's helpful

Roy should stay retired.

If Jeff Foster can have a job in the NBA (and be a good enough player that posters here wanted to sign him), I don't see why Roy can't have a few more years if he is willing to be a role player who averages under 20 mpg.

wish the best for him.  if he can come back, and not really mess himself up for later in life, good for him.

Back in the grisly old days when guys lived for playing and did so despite nominal financial gain and marginal fame, I believe many would reflect back and say "it was worth it" regardless of a leter lifetime of chronic pain or disability due to playing (more NFL than NBA).  But nowadays when a guy has had enormous financial gain (I have no reason to believe that Brandon Roy is struggling financially), incalculable fame and social advantages, and residual economic opportunities, I can't imagine that in retrospect he will ever consider it worth it if he ends up enduring chronic pain for the last 3 to 5 decades of his life.
I can't blame him if the treatment offers a miracle cure, but I sure hope he doesn't lure himself back just to recapture the thrill of 'competition' or the glory of NBA status.  It may be wiser for him to seek other ways to achieve personal satisfaction.  But easy for me to pass judgment as I don't walk in his shoes or on his knees.

I wish the best for him and Portland.

Maybe he can receive the same kind of treatment that Kobe did overseas?

It would be great to see him back, but I hope he doesn't do it unless he thinks he can compete at a high level.
