Let's imagine the quite plausible scenario that there are no deals to be had by the trade deadline involving Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen.

If you're a proponent of blowing it up, shouldn't you prefer buying then out, if that's what they, theoretically clearing playing time for younger players while saving a few million that the team might be more willing to spend in the future?

If you want to blow up the team and no trades are possible, would you rather see KG and RA bought out or ridden until the end of the season?

Only if they request it and the C's are committed to no longer trying to make another playoff run. (ie tanking)

Should Ainge wait for them to ask or should he take the initiative and go to them and ask if they want out, if he decides to commit to a full re-building strategy?

And what does that gain for the Celtics?

Well, I'm sure the "tank-iacs" would love it although its not going to drop them into prime lottery at this point, either.

They'd lose more games, and potentially save ownership an amount of money in salary costs.

I don't think its wise, but if you're of the perspective of those wanting to above all tank for high picks that's the logic.

I think it is the wise, logical conclusion if you want to blow it up and tank.  I think you're doing it wrong if you want to tank but can't bring yourself to go this route, if possible.  I don't necessarily agree that blowing it up and tanking is wise.

I agree.  I don't think it'll happen, but if everyone HAPPENS to get healthy and playing together, the potential, at least is there.

I think of it this way; if we finish with the tenth or eleventh worst record, we have what, maybe a 3% chance of getting a pick in the top 3?  Realistically, we wouldn't finish any lower than that, even without KG and Ray; we've won too many games already.

If we make it into the playoffs as the #7 or #8 seed, what are the odds all the pieces come together, and we make a run?  It's not very high....   but it's more than 3%.

Keep them together unless a trade offer comes along that will truly jumpstart the rebuild, other than just making us worse.  And, let's see what happens this spring.

The full-on rebuild can wait until summer.

There are a few teams that could actually trade for Ray... Utah has a trade exception, Indiana has cap space and Chicago has contracts that are essentially expiring... So if any of those teams are willing to give up a late 1st for Ray you do it.

KG is untradeable, though.  I assume he'll be bought out if we trade Pierce and Ray... then KG can join one of them or go win a title in Miami.

Oh man don't make me picture KG instead of Joel Anthony in Miami.

That'd be depressing.

would it hurt more than seeing him playing with Deron, Kobe and Dwight after the Lakers trade Bynum for Dwight and Pau for Deron?

I do too.

I think the Knicks are that possible team too.  And they've got history on their side

There's practically no chance that the Celtics would have any chance at a top 5 pick even if they cut Garnett and Allen, so essentially they'd be giving up a lot of postseason ticket revenue and a lot of revenue in the season from fans openly protesting a tank-job and not buying tickets/merchandise, while damaging the reputation of the team for a shot at being a bottom 10 NBA team. Sounds like a disaster all around.
