Call me callous, but does anyone get frustrated when these guys take time off during the season, missing a game in which they are being paid for, for a "personal matter"?

They basically get the entire summer off, and unlike the rest of us who live in the normal / real world (in which I get 2 weeks of vacation and am required to work the other 50 weeks)...

Oh, I know I'll get basted by some here, and that's okay.

Did Larry Bird ever take games off for "personal matters"?

Not really.

Plenty of things in life more important than a (regular season)game.

I assume if he had to miss the game it was more important.

If you have a funeral to go to, your work must let you leave. It's the law. It's a grief and death clause or something.
It's also called good taste by the organization.

Is he making a personal decision to retire and leave the money on the table and help the Celtics save luxery tax money? He got thoroughly drubbed by Joakim Noah on Thursday night. That would make me retire too if I was a former league MVP.
The beatings will continue until morale improves

I sort of feel the same way. I know things come up in life, but at the same time, you're being paid $21 MIL to do a job. And then all of a sudden during the season, you're skipping games.

Like you said, what about having the entire summer off, and oh all of September, October and November this season because of the lockout.

Call me a cold-hearted person ( which I am not) but as a fan, you can't help but be a tad suspicious. Maybe it's just the overall vibe of the team that's jading me right now. A bunch of millionaires who don't care about winning, just waiting for the hammer to fall (in the form of Danny blowing the team up.)

Also, call me ignorant, but I never see Kobe, Lebron or Durant taking nights off for "personal reasons."

Totally depends on what the "personal matter" is.  Some things in life are just more important.  Family is one of them.

OK, you're callous.  The problem isn't that KG gets to take time off for personal reasons.  The problem is that you don't get time off for similar reasons when the law should require that do get time off.

OK, you're ignorant.  Kobe Bryant has taken at least two games off due to personal reasons.  One, predictably, was in 2004 for a court hearing, but the other time in 2005 was due to his wife's ectopic pregnancy.

What does it matter if Garnett takes some time off? He took 6 months off and is still not in shape.

Let him take the rest of the year off. Even when he is here he is not here.

That's just plain disrespect.

Reality check please.

So your saying if his grandmother is dying, or some one on his wifes side of the family is sick or worse, he's not suppose to go and support his family, just because its during the season??

What is he suppose to do? Ask his family not to have issues or health during the season and wait till the off season when he has time off?

Just because Larry Bird didn't take time off doesn't mean KG is less of a dedicated player. Just means Larry Bird either didn't have personal things pop up during the season, or the games he missed they said it was for an injury in stead, or the most not likely he was as cold hearted as you are.

KG's Kid could be having tests done, why wouldn't he be around for that? Yes Allen had the same thing in the Finals, but the days worked out so he could play, they said he may had missed games if things worked out differently. Which I would have been fine with.

Missing games for Family is fine by me, thats more important than a dumb game and playing for disrespectful fans.

At the very least KG earned it after all these years.

None of us has the right to criticize KG for his authorized leave of absence. If the Powers that be have excused him, who do we think we are to say different? Who do you really think we are?

Maybe KG gets the vibe that Management doesn't care about the season (bridge year, rebuilding, etc.) so if the Boss's don't care, why should he care? That, combined with an important family issue as others stated above can lead to two games off. Management can view this as more time/development for JJ for 2 games they're likely to lose anyways.
