it is remarkable how this serial attention seeker could easily throw insesitive comments such as this, incomprehensible that he can overlook lin's play as hype when in fact it's pretty obvious what this dude can lay on the court nightly..the problem with mayweather is that his ego is punching in checks his body can't cash..until he agrees to meet pacquiao in the ring, he knows his legacy is a hollow one in the sport..

Floyd was out of line with this one.
I mean he's completely right, Lin is getting this much hype because he's Asian and he plays for the Knicks- he's a one of a kind.
But he's also a classic underdog story, which people love- Floyd seems to be overlooking that part of the fairytale which is the most important part, his underdog status.

re the Manny v Floyd fight, if you're a boxer, or you're a knowledgeable boxing fan, you have your money on Mayweather.
Heart bets on Manny, head bets the farm on Floyd.

Miguel Cotto is going to kick Floyd's ass, and that should put all the crappy chatter about Manny to rest.

I honestly think Cotto has a better chance than Pacquaio

I see the error in Floyd's judgement, but I also ask myself...

Would Lin be getting this much attention if he were black after 4-5 games like this?
No way.

It will not happen.  For all his faults, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is by far the best boxer of his generation and probably the best since Ali.  He does it all in the ring and does it better than everyone else in the world.  Cotto's skill set actually matches up well with Floyd and he should give him a good fight, but Cotto only wins the fight if he connects and gets a flukey type of knockout.

No way.

Maybe, maybe not.  We have no way of knowing, because what Lin has done is completely unprecedented in league history.  I'm sure his play will eventually fade, but a guy who comes out of nowhere to immediately turn around his team, in the largest media market in the country, is going to draw attention.

Mayweather is a racist who has a history of saying racist things.  He's a disgusting human being who is rich and famous because he can punch other people really good.  He's definitely not anybody who should be admired or taken seriously.

It's disgusting that Mayweather is even talking to the media in the first place, since he should be behind bars right now.  However, he was cut a break so that he can fight.  That seems like a fairly serious lapse of judgment and discretion on the sentencing judge's part, as most violent criminals aren't given stays of several months after conviction.  Of course, most violent criminals aren't celebrities, either.

No way.

And see - that's the thing that's lost, here.

I've commented in many threads about how I feel that what Lin is doing is great for the game. He reminds me of Yao in the fact that he can play AND he is Asian.

But there is "some" truth to what Mayweather is saying, here - a "part" of the attention focused on Lin is because he is Chinese-Taiwanese.

But to me - it is an innocent kind of attention. He is what he is.

The unfortunate part for Mayweather here is that he's been known to make insensitive comments, so even IF he meant no harm here he will be misunderstood in this case.

But Jeremy Lin appears to have game. Not even CP3's first five starts in the NBA were THIS epic.

My only knock is that as incredible as the run has been for NY, I'm still hesistant to call him a star until this season has run it's course. If he can remain integrated once Melo and Amar'e returns, and keep up similar numbers, then I'm sold. NY had better open its pocket book for him.

Also looking forward to BOS standing in the way of whatever plans that NY has, too. If Rondo is smart, he is licking his chops for the next game vs NY.

He'd better be ready.

UNdrafted rookie from Harvard, already cut twice and is putting up epic numbers?  The hysteria is racial?

Maybe it is just the fans rejoicing at the game being played, instead of the awful iso's, moaning, and flopping that has become the NBA.  I like Lin because he is everythign Lebron, Carmelo and Kobe are not.  His pedigree has him so far out of water in the NBA as would nearly every stars pedigree have them out of water at Harvard.

This is a wonderful story.  I can't stand the knicks - but I am rooting for this kid.

DOn't even get me started on teh state of officiating.

It's sort of a double-edged sword. Would he have been held back as long as he was if was black, not Asian?

Would he be garnering this sort of mega-hype if he were black? Certainly not.

I don't think it's a bad thing, it's a fact of life.

Asian PG's, Black QB's, Black Golfers... Fact of life.

Yeah, maybe I'm being blind, but I see these as the bigger reasons in all the hype.  He took a team with 2 of the bigger superstars in the NBA that was a huge disappointment and turned them around by himself.  Oh, and that team resides in the basketball capitol of the world.

Maybe the initial "Asian-shock" factor wore off on me after seeing him play at GS while this is the first Lin exposure for a lot of people?  I guess I thought the kid could play last year too, so maybe that's a reason I can't really see the hype either.

everything you say about Mayweather is true, but his actual Tweet about Lin wasn't racist at all.

That isn't a racist statement at all and probably has a great deal of truth in it even if the man saying it is in fact a racist.

Maybe "Linsanity" wouldn't be getting this much press if he was black, but it would still be huge simply because it is happening to the New York Knicks. Perhaps you have all noticed that whatever happens in New York has an out-sized impact on the news. Remember Hurricane Irene? The media hysteria leading up to it was apocalyptic. Similarly with Lin - if he was doing this and was still on Golden State, non-NBA fans would not have heard anything about it.

I think the attention Lin is receiving is mainly because of race and you know what? It's great! I see no problem with it.

The NBA has seen just about a handful of Asian players in the history of the league. To see such a dynamic come out of nowhere story from an Asian American is great for the league and the game of basketball.

I've spoken with a couple of asian kids who I coach and they love the guy. He's instantly a role model for young asian players.

Racial attention can be positive and in this case it is.
