I've had this idea for a while, thought sharing it would be cool to see what others thought of it.

So all star weekend in the NBA is rarely something I get excited for even though I'm a big Celtics fan. The dunk constest is usually fun to watch and some of the other skills games maybe but the celeb game is usually pretty boring after about 10 minutes. The game itself is usually pretty interesting imo.

My idea is that they should keep the all star game and MAYBE the dunk contest (if they could find somewhere to squeeze it) and make it a 2 night event. The first night would be a 32 player (fan voted) 1v1 competition with random seeding. You'd see people like Rondo getting matched up with Dwight Howard and the like. Basically play to 3, every shot is a point and things like steals and blocks could be half a point (maybe?). An example would be if it were tied 1 to 1 and someone stole the ball the score would be 1.5 to .5, same thing with a block. Or it could even just be play to 3 first to score 3 wins.  Ideally one game elimination to the point of it getting down to the final 1v1 match and winner takes all. This would be similar to MLB all star weekend where the HR derby is one night and the game is the next night.

Am I the only one who thinks that would be really cool and would watch the entire thing?

I think I'd rather watch some sort of running competition to determine the fastest player in the NBA and a bench press contest to determine the strongest player.

Interesting ideas.  TP.

My brother was mentioning to me the other day how he'd like to see the league make the all-star game determine home court advantage in the Finals like how the MLB does it.  I know many don't like that idea and for good reason, but I wonder if it would give extra incentive to the players to try to actually play hard and win the game.  Perhaps it would make it more entertaining/competitive rather than the ally-oop contest that it has become.  My brother also theorized that if the game was more competitive, it may also have a ripple effect that would encourage/draw more stars in the league to participate in the other competitions that weekend.

Cool ideas!

I always wanted to see a Rock n Jock stlye All Star game. At the very least, the celebrity game should be more like the good ol' days of the violators vs. the bricklayers....

Oh yeah, I also want the dunk contest reformatted.

2 brackets...bigs bracket vs. littles bracket. (the cutoff is 6' 5")

Then the champs square off.

I'd ditch the dunk contest completely.  hasn't been worth watching in 20 years.

Keep the 3 point shooting contest if we keep anything.

The game itself is ok.  I haven't felt compelled to watch it since Bird stopped playing in it.

Personally, I could do without the whole thing and just keep playing out the season.

i have had a basic idea for years and i think it makes sense and would improve the weekend with the fans.

keep all the competitions, HOWEVER, the participants can only be the players that are on the all star teams.

What I'd really like to see is rookies vs D-League All-Stars.

That's a great idea if you could somehow get the players to agree to that.  I'm guessing they'd put up quite a stink about it though.

Wow I like that one too.

Gives the D-Leaguers a real chance to showcase their talent too...

That's a good idea.

Running with that scenario, I want to see a couple of new games added, just for guys in the All-Star game:

All 24 guys lineup in random order to play Knockout or Bump or whatever you call it in your area.  That would be pretty cool to see.

Then the winner of that game gets to start off with the ball in a big game of 21 with all 24 all-stars participating.

Remember the Legends game they use to have too.  Bring that back but with a twist: this time it's a WNBA Legends game  8)

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

Does anyone else just really like the All Star Weekend?

I see a lot of complaints about it, but I almost always love it. Some are better than others, and I think there's probably room for improvement but I'm just surprised by the amount of criticism I hear when I consistently enjoy it.

i still like all star saturday night and always look forward to it.  the all star game is "meh" to me.  I only really tend to look forward to it if there are celtics in the game.  back when there were no celtics playing, the only thing that got me to watch was my love for jordan.
