This from Today...

http://celticshub.com/2012/02/05/5-questions-with-o-j-mayo/

Talks about how their is no stigma that he's heard about players not wanting to sign with Boston. He talks highly about the organization and suggests as a free agent he would sign here.

Pretty nice to hear...

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
I'm one of the first guys to say when a guy is 'just paying lip service' with this stuff, because the phrase "I've never heard it" just doesn't ring true to me.

But its encouraging for him to blithely say there isn't a stigma now. Maybe there isn't.

I would think it's very rare when asked point blank to a player, particularly when visiting a city, if he'd consider playing there that he would say no.

At the same time, he *did* manage to stuff multiple cliches into his response immediately prior to that:

Whatever the team needs.  Just a ball player, gonna give 110% whether I start or come off the bench.

OJ has a career in broadcasting after his sports career, being able to so effortlessly spout phrases that mean little or nothing.

EDIT:  "OJ has a career in broadcasting after his sports career"?  Hopefully not followed by a highly-publicized trial and a life behind bars.  Thanks, OJ #1, for ruining it for everyone else named OJ.

I actually do believe him - to a point. There was his comment awhile back that if he could play with any PG, he'd love to play with Rondo (rough paraphrasing there). So in that regard, I do believe it's crossed his mind a time or two.
2021 Houston Rockets
PG: Kyrie Irving/Patty Mills/Jalen Brunson
SG: OG Anunoby/Norman Powell/Matisse Thybulle
SF: Gordon Hayward/Demar Derozan
PF: Giannis Antetokounmpo/Robert Covington
C: Kristaps Porzingis/Bobby Portis/James Wiseman

My impression of it is that OJ Mayo is actively looking for employment elsewhere next season.

Knowing full well that the Grizzlies don't rate him highly and that he is unlikely to receive an overly attractive financial package for them + that he will not now or at any time in the near future receive a starting role again for Memphis and that if he wants one he'll have to leave town.

Not that he is desperately trying to leave but that he realizes his best opportunities for financial rewards + playing time and role will be outside of Memphis. I fully expect that Boston is one of the teams OJ Mayo is looking at as a possible alternative.

i'm all for gordon (minus injuries) but javel would do anything for a highlight, even if it means he messes up a good play

I remember tht article Juice can play but his confidence has been shaken in memphis wit a guy like rondo i think his numbers can skyrocket people tend to forget he did average 19 ppg his rookie year

I really don't know how Memphis doesn't extend a qualifying offer to OJ next season and pretty much matches any offer, unless an absurd one comes along.

I would expect that a shooter who has seen the kind of looks Ray gets from Rondo would like to play with him.

I don't believe that Boston has a stigma among younger guys. They associate the Celtics with Pierce and with the Big 3 era.

I would agree that Boston is not an attractive city to a FA just because it is Boston. It is a slow city and pretty boring unless you like nerd culture or hanging with frat brahs. I am a bit of a science nerd, so it works for me.

So that's TWO, maybe Three very good players who'd want to play with Rondo/Boston.

O.J., here - and Josh Smith?

Perhaps Dwight Howard? But I have a "I'll believe it when he's wearing Green" mindset with him.

Barring a miracle there's no way we could sign all three, unfortunately.

But yeah I'd like OJ Mayo in Green one day.

Only top tier guys can really pick and choose cities since their contracts are limited by CBA anyway. Howard can pick the city he likes. Mayo is not a max guy, so he looks for the best contract. Of course he would sign here if we are going to shell out money.
