With the Knicks watching their $225 mil trio fall 7 games under .500 and having no cap space and only a single first round draft pick in the next 3 years to look forward to, I think some significant roster shake-ups are inevitable.

As they are probably unwilling to move Melo and may not be able to get an acceptable return for Amar'e, there's a chance that Chandler becomes available.

If so do the C's have an attractive offer that could bolster their contending hopes this year?

JO/Bass/Dooling + our 2012 picks (or alternately the Clips pick and a 2013 pick to minimize the burden on NY's 2012 cap space) for Chandler/Balkman/Douglas is the best I can come up with for the moment.

That trade would put the Knicks approximately $15 mil under the cap, after Melo, Amare, Shumpert, a 2012 rook and the various cap holds are accounted for. Perhaps enough to convince Deron Williams to defect from the Nets in the event that Howard gets traded to LA.

I don't think getting Chandler alone puts over the top enough to warrant killing our cap flexibility anyways, particularly giving away draft picks for him and including Bass who is our best bench scorer. Even if NY agrees, I wouldn't do it.

Well, it creates a double problem, since it helps us, but perhaps saves the Knicks from sucking for a long time by allowing them to replace Chandler with another star.

But I'd think about it. Chandler's better than Perk ever was and solves all of our problems. Thus, he could be a game changer here.

I mean if you think this team can take the Bulls and Heat to 6-7 games now, you have to believe that Chandler makes them good enough to have at least a shot to win the series.

While I don't love what he does to our cap, let's realize something: the chances of us making a big free agent splash this summer is very, very small.

So immediate cap space isn't likely the premium some would make it out to be.

I agree, but understand that you're paying 13-14.5 million for 4 years for a player like Chandler at a time when we may need to start to rebuild, that's a huge mistake.

I doubt there's a big splash FA signing next year myself, but this type of move that really kills cap flexibility is just horrible I think.

Probably not ... New York will want to give their trio more time to work with and/or give a new coaching staff a chance with them before breaking up their nucleus.

Fair chance they can move Tyson Chandler next summer to a team below the cap should they want to free up enough cap space to sign a Deron Williams or Dwight Howard. Probably don't need to force a move now to make that opportunity (cap space) happen.

First of all, I doubt New York wants to give up on Chandler this quick.

Second, there's no way in hell I'd want to take on Chandler's contract. I don't really see him as an upgrade to what Perkins is, and he is most certainly not a piece that a team should be building around.

Don't get me wrong, Tyson was one of my favorite players in the NBA last year and I love his defense and intensity, but his new contracts makes him one of the most overpaid players in the league. Thanks, but no thanks. I'd rather have Chris Wilcox for his $3 million. I really doubt Tyson could put the Celtics over the top.

I think Tyson Chandler will be trade-able so I am not too concerned about the cap angle of it all. His reputation is sky high, having a very good season in NY and would/should have a really good run here in Boston if they made the trade. Lots of teams out there looking for a center.

Worst case, you can't move him but you are building around a Rondo + Pierce + Tyson troika ... which is a pretty good foundation to build around in the immediate sense. Keep Bass, Ray Allen and Jeff Green. Could probably push out a pair of 50 win seasons with that squad. Rebuild on the run. Not an ideal way to rebuild your roster but it could be interesting. I'd quite enjoy watching that mix of players.

Good points all. Especially since they might be holding out hope for a late season turnaround with Baron Davis and potentially JR Smith joining the squad.

I'd just love to see Chandler on this squad. Brilliant fit.

That's my thought too. Tyson should be tradeable, especially if he thrives here (and there's every reason to believe he will).

I might take Varejo over him, since he has one fewer year (due to a team option). But I absolutely wouldn't be against bringing in either big man, making a last run, bringing everyone back next year, and assessing things then.

As long as Danny keeps everyone to sensible deals, we should be able to stay competitive and have the ability to make trades to build for the future.

In theory, you're correct. But we'll already be paying Rondo $10M per year and Pierce $15M per year for 3 of those 4 years anyways (including this one you are referring to), so I can't say that I truly think we will be in a "rebuilding" phase during the next 3 years anyways with those 2 players on the roster.

Great point that I hadn't initially thought of. I do think they will have to move him and he won't ever be a fit there. He clogs up too much of Amare's operating space. This team needs Amare to be the C and live with sacrificing defense. If they really want to build a strong defensive team, then they should think of moving Amare and Melo (not happening).

I'd see if Deron will come there this offseason. If so, trade Chandler this offseason. If not, then play out another season and try to get Chris Paul the following offseason (who has said he wants to play there).
