  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Gives us the rebounding we need, stops the Cavs from floating in the dead zone for a season or two and relegates them back to the lottery definitely (Verajao is winning them too many games right now). They'll get our picks, PLUS their picks in the next draft and they get JO's expiring deal.

Do you pull the trigger? Verajao is young and could also be used in a deal for Howard at the end of the season.
We give up our two picks and an old center.
I think we'd have to throw in one more piece to make it a sweeter deal. The question is:

Would giving up our two first round picks next year be worth it to get an overpaid Verajao for a playoff run this year, and his likely worth in a Dwight Howard potential trade? (or any trade for a superstar for that matter).

Quote
Hell, if I were Danny Ainge, I'd offer O'Neal's expiring, my 2012 no. 1 AND the Clippers' no. 1 for him.2 Wouldn't you take your chances with a Rondo-Allen-Pierce-Garnett-Varejao quintet this spring? Or am I just a complete homer? That reminds me …

Part of me says 'YES, PULL THE TRIGGER!', but the other half says we may need those picks for something bigger, and even with Verajao we don't have more than a 10% chance of winning all the glory this year.

"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Cleveland has no reason to trade AV.

This makes us a better team immediately and helps solve our biggest problem.  But I don't think Sideshow would is enough of an impact to vault us into top contender status.  In that case, it's probably not worth it to give up the picks.

I'd like to get verajao but I'm loathe to give up 2 1st rounders in this draft for him.

maybe JO, Wilcox/Bradley and a 1st.

Auctioning off future for Verajao is dumbest idea ever. Its a double whammy for the Celtics. They lose cap room, and lose draft picks. All for a role player, Hell NO!

Out of all the terrible, terrible, terrible trades I've seen here over the past few years, this has to be the worst one I've seen.

One thing to note is that he is 29 years old. The Cavs would jump on this in a heartbeat. He has no long term value for this team. By the time they have rebuilt around Kyrie Irving, AV will be too old and will have lost all trade value. If they could get two first's in a deep draft, they jump on it. Now, for us, unless we could really pull it together at the end of the year and make a huge run (even with AV) then we would just be giving up our picks for a guy who make $9 million for the next three years (and one year team option), killing our cap flexibility. I would only do this if only one pick was involved. Maybe JO, Wilcox and a first for Verajao (and maybe a second rounder from them)

Did you, by chance, happen to catch last night's game?

The best thing about next season is the flexibly we have with draft picks and cap space, neither of which I would be willing to give up for a AV type player. Personally I'm ready to blow this team up.

Would you rather go in to the playoffs this year as a 6 through 8 seed or start the rebuilding process. Granted other teams have to be willing to give-up enough to make blowing up this team worth it.

The problem I see for this team next year if we don't start the rebuilding process now; is that in the off-season we are going to have to replace 3 starters. (O'neal, KG, and Ray) I don't think any of them have enough left in the tank to warrant re-signing.

Next years' draft is one of the deepest in a long time. I would like to add some youth to the team (Cody Zeller, James Mcadoo, Meyers Leonard, and Austin Rivers should be available around where we are going to be picking) and a few veterans via the cap space.

I know in my mind its time to move-on when I get more excited/enjoyment watching some of our bench players then our starters.

then you haven't seen very many of them.  there's been many, many, many that have been far worse -- just in the past week.  I still wouldn't do this deal but I get the reasoning behind it.

I'd be a little hesitant, but I'd do it.

In Anderson Varejao, you've got a proven defensive big-man who has some offensive ability and is signed to a pretty reasonable contract.

I know it's supposedly a loaded draft (I say that to imply I have limited knowledge of college basketball), but I like the idea of taking the proven commodity. Especially when that proven commodity is roughly seven feet tall.

It cuts into our cap space, sure. But if we don't get Dwight Howard, what are you looking at? Spencer Hawes is sure to command that kind of money, and I'd take Varejao over Hawes 10 times out of 10.

Worst case scenario, you flip him to a contender who needs a big later down on the road and probably take back a (admittedly less valuable) first round pick back.

If this happens, won't this take us out of the running of signing someone significant next season?

I thought Andy was 10 mil a yr?

If bass didn't excercise his option we'd be at about 40 mil, if he did it'd be 44. Not sure how much money that would leave us after cap holds.

Thats 34 mil without Bass and 38 if Bass picks-up his option.

http://hoopshype.com/salaries/boston.htm

But with the year he is putting together its hard to see him coming back for 4 mil.
