The East is so weak that the Celtics are basically locked into the 7th seed despite being very up and down and overall a pretty mediocre team.

If they were in the West, there's no chance they'd make the playoffs.

Yes, after getting off to a horrible start the Celts are all of one game in the loss column out of the 8th playoff spot in the West. I doubt it's ever happened in nba history that a team made up such a large deficit with a mere 47 games remaining in the season.

No chance?  The only team in the West who I think we have very little chance of catching record-wise is the Thunder.

The rest of those teams out there don't look all that intimidating to me.

::)

Teams like the Mavs, Spurs, Lakers, Grizzlies, Rockets, and Blazers are hovering on the edge of a playoff spot in the West right now.  One of those teams could very well miss the playoffs.  The Celtics aren't better than any of them.

Put all our players on the court fairly healthy and we could be better than any of them. Do you really think you're listing overly impressive teams?

Shockingly, there are other people here who don't share your penchant for hand wringing.

I doubt it.  My parents have never been that good at keeping secrets.

He does seem to have a pretty good grasp on this basketball team, the players on it, and the game in general, though.

No, I don't think I'm listing overly impressive teams.  That's kind of the point.

As for the "hand wringing" comment -- I'm not sure that's a proper use of the term, really.

Quote
hand·wring·ing or hand wringing  (hndrngng)
n.
1. Clasping and squeezing of the hands, often in distress.
2. An excessive expression of distress: handwringing by some experts over the state of the economy.

I wouldn't characterize my feelings about the Celtics as "distressed" the vast majority of the time.  Just because I don't have a rosy view of things doesn't mean I'm "Chicken-Little-ing" all the time.

Heheh.

I would agree with you that BBallTim has a good grasp on all of those things; I would argue that I do, too.

He and I just seem to come to very different conclusions based on that knowledge most of the time.

In fact, since we've got only one "Positivity" thread, we should do a "Vent here (Celts lost again)" thread instead of having a new "Sky is falling" thread each time we lose. It gets old to see two or three "negative"/"realist" threads every [dang] time we lose a game. We're going to lose some, you know? No draws or ties in basketball, folks.

I'd gladly do a thread solely for the purpose of letting people vent and when (or if) I start a thread, I will promise to stay away from it. What do the mods say? Totally crazy idea or what?

seems like a great idea actually post the "Vent" thread or the "celtics lost vent here" thread & any other negative whiney threeads get deleted

I think that risks crossing into some murky waters in terms of censoring what people want to post.

I feel like the game threads themselves already become "celtics lost vent here" threads or "ra ra go celtics!" threads depending on how things go.

Depending on how things are going for the team at any given time, a great many posts seem to get labeled as either "negative" and "sky-is-falling" or "green Kool-Aid", "cheerleading" etc.

I don't think we'd have a good atmosphere around here if we confined generally "positive" talk to one specific thread and generally "negative" talk to another thread, and all other threads that could be interpreted to fall into one of those categories got deleted by Mods without any discussion.

I think we will finish right around .500% and be the 6th ,7th or 8th seed.  I would like to see us finish higher but can we truly say we will be more consistent.   We might be worse who knows...

I think right around .500 (probably a few games above) and 6th, 7th, or 8th seed sounds right.  We might be worse, but I don't see that happening unless our main guys miss some serious time due to the injuries.

It seems that as long as we have either Rondo or Pierce playing, we'll at least be in most of the games we play.  If we're without both of those guys for an extended periods, though, we might see some wicked losing streaks.

Call me nuts but I still say the Celtics win the Atlantic and pick up a 3rd or 4th seed.

Philly isn't that good at all and the rest of the division sucks. What are we 4 games back with 46 games to go?

Yeah, Atlantic division win and a 3rd or 4th seed sounds right to me.

I'm saying this somewhat tongue in cheek, but Nick, you're nuts.

I don't think you give the Sixers enough credit, for one thing.

Also, being 4 games back with the Celtics' injury woes and the condensed schedule is actually a much bigger gap than it would normally be in a regularly scheduled season.
