I think, as a whole, many fans didn't appreciate exactly what Pierce was doing prior to the "big three" era.  There's no doubt this has been an amazing, electric week for Pierce.  Well, back in 2006, he practically did this for a full season:  27 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 47% shooting, 1.4 steals.

It's just crazy to look back at some of Pierce's stats, and then his playoff numbers, and ask yourself "Were we underrating him?  Was he a top ten player all along?"  Because, as easy as it is to now misremember, nobody was calling Pierce a top ten player.  Instead, it was "great player on a bad team", despite some of his playoff heroics.

As Paul's career winds down, and the prospect of not seeing him in a Celtics uniform becomes more and more real, it makes me reflect on just how lucky we've been.  I vividly remember the 1998 draft, and praying for Pierce to fall to us.  When he did, I was cheering, and my buddy's father asked "Is he any good?", and me saying that he was going to for sure be the steal of the draft.  I had no idea just how lucky we were at the time, though.

I will miss Paul when he's gone.  I hope that's not for a couple of more seasons, at least.

What Pierce has done the past few games is very impressive.  He's been putting up LeBron numbers without crazy athleticism or speed.  Just carrying the team, plain and simple.

That said, I don't think anything has really changed about this team's prospects.  They've always been better than a sub-.500 team.  I maintain that they'll finish with 33-36 wins; unless they make a trade to shore up the center position (e.g. acquire Kaman somehow), I don't see them as a true threat against Heat or a mostly healthy Bulls team.

You think that if you added Ray and Rondo to a team that's playing like these guys have been the last couple of games you wouldn't even have a *threat* to beat the Heat or the Bulls? Wow.

I'm not convinced they can contend with those teams.  I love the way they're playing and I think they are going to turn out better then I thought they would before this stretch but a true title contender.....I'm not sold yet.   I still think against the elite teams in a seven game series, age and lack of athleticism will catch up with them.  It's not the heart, the drive, the championship pedigree, it's the legs.

I would LOVE to be wrong though.

You could be right.  However, folks were saying the same thing in 2010, when we were six minutes away from a title, even despite Perk's knee injury.

its because he lacks elite athleticism, same with Dirk(before he won the championship) those guys have put together solid all around basketball games with alot of skill..

but the fans/pundits always like/give more attention to the flashier/more athletic players...

A healthy Pierce playing at an elite level can get your team to the playoffs (in the Eastern Conference).

At the very least close to a .500 ball club.....

Add to that Pierce a 2nd tier star in Antoine Walker, good team defense, and hot 3 point shooting...there should be no surprise that the team can improve to be over a .500 ball club.

Add to Pierce 2 other hall of famers and an young star PG and you got a championship contender every year.

I agree Paul is special yet fools not saying any names insist we trade and ship him out it's sickening.

Maybe some people equate 'athletic' with jumping? Dirk can run circles around the average 7 footer, even if he doesn't jump really high.

I wouldn't blame any fan for talking that way though because professional talent evaluators talk the same way, such as GMs when they say 'we need to get more athletic' and they really mean 'we need to get faster players who run hard'.

Dirk is skilled, but not athletic.  I would say the only 7 footers in the game today that are athletic would be Javale McGee and Roy Hibbert.  And maybe Bynum if he lost some weight.

I think he was getting top 10 press during the 2001-2002 season.  He was leading the league in 4th quarter scoring and putting up some incredible individual performances.  He ended up 3rd team All-NBA that year, but I think if he would have built on that the next year he would have had a chance at ousting AI from the 2nd team.

Unfortunately he went on to have his two worst years shooting from the field as the team went into steep decline.  Thrust him out of the spotlight.  Never was prolific enough a scorer to garner more attention without team success (T-Mac and AI got props for chucking their way to absurd point averages despite mediocre teams).
2025 Draft: Chicago Bulls

PG: Chauncey Billups/Deron Williams
SG: Kobe Bryant/Eric Gordon
SF: Jimmy Butler/Danny Granger/Danilo Gallinari
PF: Al Horford/Zion Williamson
C: Yao Ming/Pau Gasol/Tyson Chandler

I think you forgot Dwight Howard and DeAndre Jordan.  Not sure I'd put Roy Hibbert in that category.
