I stumbled across this trade scenario where Boston is shipping out Pierce to either ATL, Memphis, Indiana, Houston and Utah. I'm not a insider (subscriber) so I cant read the whole post. Personally I like Smith and think he's the best alongside Rondo (of these trades), because he can run with him and they're friends from waay back in HS.

http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/story?id=7492743&_slug_=nba-five-best-fits-trading-paul-pierce&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fnba%2fstory%3fid%3d7492743%26_slug_%3dnba-five-best-fits-trading-paul-pierce

Smith is an athletic and versatile forward. He is a big-time rebounder and shot-blocker and can defend multiple positions. He can handle and pass for a big man while also being able to step away from the basket and knock down the perimeter shot. However, there is a problem with their team chemistry. Smith desperately needs a veteran coach like Doc Rivers to get him to play hard, help him with shot selection and drive him to be the best player he can be. The Hawks would benefit with the addition of a player of Pierce's veteran stature. Frankly, the Hawks need a star, a go-to player who is not afraid to be the face of the franchise.

So what do you think? Is it worth it? Doc as coach, Rondo as PG, KG as mentor.. Think its excactly what he needs.. Think its a good trade for both BOS and ATL. And I rather see Pierce on another team, chasing a championship, instead of going through another rebuild.. We owe him. Also, having Josh Smith around in a rebuilding prosses, with rondo.. and (so far) two 1st rounders in a VERY deep draft.. Doc is around for another 5 years.. We also have a bit bigger chance to get Dwight.. (just saying).

In the end.. I just want to say that I love Pierce. I love what he's done here.. and I love the fact he was drafted a Celtic, allways played like a Celtic, won a ring as a Celtic and if the name in front of his jersey says ATL or BOSTON.. He'll ALLWAYS be a Celtic.

Doc's gonna tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear.

Yeah iknow, my username is Kendrick Perkins and my ranking is Jeff Green. Ironic huh?

as I said in numerous threads

we can treat Dwight like the KG deal back in 07-08

We all know Dwight wants to play with Josh Smith and CP3, now that CP3 is in the Clippers so if Clippers want him they gotta trade for him...

I know Deron Williams said hes watching for Dwight but I heard nothing about Dwight wanting to play with Deron...

now KG had no intentions playing in Boston til we landed Ray Allen

can we do the same with Josh and take a gamble. Do you think by getting Josh our chances of getting Howard in FA will be higher?

I really don't get the Josh Smith infatuation here. I live in Atlanta, and everyone here is ready to ship him off. He is uncoachable. He kills fast breaks by dribbling and shooting long 2s.

As for him bringing Howard here: Howard is FROM Atlanta, and Smith is currently with the Hawks, and yet Howard never mentions Atlanta as a possible destination. What would make you think that he'd want boston because of smith, then?

I wouldnt trade Pierce for Smith... I would trade Allen or KG or both but Im not sure what Atlanta would be interested in from us. Aside from Rondo or Pierce Id throw a package with anyone for Smith.

to have the cap room to sign someone like Howard you have to trade Pierce for Smith as if you don't a lot of the cap room is used up by Smith.

Frankly I don't think Atlanta takes on Pierce's contract straight up for Smith.  They might do this however as it shaves money elsewhere.

Pierce, filler (anyone outside of Moore as he isn't enough salary) for Smith, Williams

Marvin is essentially Jeff Green (pros and cons a bit different but essentially the same player) so he can provide some quality minutes at both the 3 and 4 and his contract isn't terrible.  Smith is a solid good #2/3 type player that does a bit of everything well.

It also works as Pierce, Allen for Smith, Williams, Hinrich (not that I would do that, but might if Atlanta also threw in a first)
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

the worst thing that happens is we end up with a young Josh Smith instead of an old Paul Pierce.

Also don't worry about loyalty to Paul Pierce. There was a day he was asking to be traded. Nothing wrong with giving him his wish

No.

Josh Smith is an over payed player.

He is good, but not good enough for a rebuilding team to eat up all that cap space.

I'm not completely against trading Paul Pierce depending on how the next few weeks go but I want no part of Josh Smith.

To me he is a great basketball talent but also a basketball air head.  He comes across to me as a guy who will never be happy just doing the things he does well and not doing the things he does poorly(like shoot from the perimeter).  If he could be hat player he'd be pretty valuable but he has never shown the ability or desire to reign it in.

I appreciate where you are coming from on this.
But it is not the case that KG wanted to play with Ray Allen. KG just wanted to go to a winner.

In order to get Dwight Howard, the Cs need to show that they are putting together a winner.

Whether Josh Smith gets the Cs closer to that or not is up to debate.
Celtics fan for life.
