According to Gary Washburn from Boston Globe:
The Celtics will be buyers, and Ainge will have a chance to attract players strictly with cash. One thing he is keeping abreast of is the progress of contract negotiations with fourth-year free agents such as Kevin Love.

----------------------------------------------------------

He seems to be a perfect fit for the Celtics, but the Timberwolves would really have to botch this one for him to become available. He is only 23, one of the game’s top rebounders and a smooth outside scorer. The Celtics would offer him max dollars, but the Timberwolves would have the right to match. Chances: 15 percent.

Would absolutely love to have the guy, but as I've stated before - unfortunately, I think Minnesota is probably a more attractive place to play going forward than Boston.

Me too.  If he doesn't sign by Wednesday, then our chances go up big time!  If Minny is only offering 61 over 4, then I would hope Danny would offer him something like 96 over 6 to get it done.  I don't think there's anyway Kahn would match.

Don't see anyway this can happen this year.  Love is restricted and Minny can offer him more money, larger annual raises, and a longer deal.  The Cs would be doing Minny a huge favor by signing Love to an offer cuz they could match it and get Love at a discount.

  • Rondo = Good
My apologies, but this seems warranted:

By the way, to those of you talking about the Celtics offering 5+ years to Love if the T-Wolves only offer him 4, I'm fairly certain that's not possible.  Per the new CBA, the Celtics would only be able to offer Love 4 years, and their offer would be much lower in terms of total $$ than whatever the Wolves could offer.  The Wolves have the upper hand even if they wait till this summer.

Also, make no mistake -- even if Love does make it to restricted free agency, it's hard to imagine the Celtics as his first choice.  He already has a young pass-first point guard with all kinds of potential to play with in Minnesota, and he also has plenty of other young teammates with potential.  The Celtics just have Rondo, and an ancient Paul Pierce for another 2 seasons.  Edge: Minnesota.

How is Minny getting a discount when they are offering him 61 over 4, and we could pay 96 over 6?

Like the other poster said, the team that owns the rights to a player can offer more years and more money.  Maybe Minny hasn't offered Love max money and years yet, but eventually they will have to, and any Cs deal will be for less.

Insult?  Nobody.

The "Duh!" was directed to the original poster.  Of course the Celtics would offer Love the max.  That's not particularly enlightening.

So restricted FA's can only be offered 4 year deals(per the new CBA)?

In all fairness to me, this is the first time a media source confirmed as much.  I wasn't trying to enlighten anybody -- it was just confirmation that he was/is indeed on Danny's radar.  Finally, to say that Danny would "of course offer him the max" -- how do you know this?  Maybe he's not Danny's type of player.  Maybe Danny wants more athleticism at the 4 spot.

any team in the league with the cap space and an opening at the PF position would offer the max to a guy in his early 20's averaging 20-25 pts and 10-15 rebounds per game.

that's just the market price for that kind of player.

I'm happy he won't end up a Celtic. Let him stay where he's at it's the best for all.
