As much as I want to blame Ainge, we really can't

This just has been a string of bad luck that has fallen on us since the 2010 finals

1) Kendrick Perkins gets hurt...had that not happened, we'd have a championship

2) Shaq goes down, Rondo gets hurt, KG has some type of injury...if not for that we'd have a 3rd championship in the big 3 era

3) Jeff Green has to get open heart surgery...

4) Kristic goes to Russia [although not as significant]

5) The clippers randomly land Chris Paul and Baron Davis hurting the clips draft pick

6) We go after David West, seemed like a sure thing, it fails

7) We go after Chris Paul, I thought we had the best deal on the table...doesn't go down...somehow The lakers miss out and the clippers land them...going back to #5

Danny has made the right moves going forward

Luck has seemed to not be going our way at the moment for the celtics

but things will have to change

1. He traded Perk (not that I think we would've beat Miami anyway)

2. No GM in the league would have been dumb enough to bet on Shaq's health.  He hadnt played consistently in five years before that.

3. He didn't use the MLE in 2010.  One player above 6'6 and we win.

4. Jeff Green sucks.  Oklahoma City was eager to push him off on someone because of his low basketball IQ

5. He lost out on David West to the Indiana freakin Pacers..one of the least desirable destinations in the league

No GM is perfect - but Danny is far cry from being above average

Yeah, I'd say that's representative of my feelings, too.

Most of Danny's moves since the summer of '08 (which was horrific) have made sense to me, except for the Perk trade.  I liked the Rasheed signing, the Marquis signing, the JO and Shaq signings, the Delonte signing, the Avery Bradley draft pick, the JJJ draft pick, etc., etc.  Almost all of it made logical sense to me.

DA deserves some of the blame.

1) Horrible draft picks
2) Perk trade; championship caliber starting Center don't grow on trees.  
3) Perk trade; Failure to snag either James Harden or Serge Ibaka in the trade.
4) Constant trade rumors smothering the team
5) Never finding an adequate backup Point Guard in big3 era; Clipper have 5 PG on their roster for crying out loud.

Danny Ainge is a good GM, everybody can use hindsight to say who they should have picked instead but that's just silly.

What about all the draft picks he made before 2006 that he showcased and turned into a championship?

What about how Boston's been one of the best teams in the league for the past 4 years but through SMART non-signings/trades (TA, Posey, Perkins) The Celtics will have significant cap space to rebuild via Free Agency over the past two seasons.

I remember Rick Pitino running the team, you guys complaining about Ainge is insane compared to that.

Ironically everything people say about Ainge is more about Pitino. "Ainge is too gun happy with trades." << heard that one about the Perkins trade which is absolute garbage. The Celtics get the cap space from not overpaying a role player, they get an additional 1st round pick in the middle of the pack, and they got Jeff Green.

Count the threads talking about blowing it up and getting even more cap space for this summer, alot of that would be impossible if you had Perkins' contract on the books along with Rondo and Pierce.

Sort of making it my lot in life to call this errant theory out every time it surfaces.

Those deals were made because two franchises were looking to dump huge contracts for pennies on the dollar. Ainge traded a lottery pick, a guy who still can't guard Regis Philbin and two bags of trash for Garnett and Allen.

Every time I hear that haul called "developed assets," it's good for a hearty laugh.

Ainge was in the right place at the right time, and was able to divest himself of the flotsam from a historicslly bad Celtics team. Always better to be lucky.

No GM is perfect so you'll always be able to find blame if you want to.  Same goes for presidents and presidential candidates.

I appreciate that the franchise was turned around and brought a championship, a game-7 finals appearance, and 2 other years of competitive basketball.  Everyone, and that means everyone, knew on the day that PP, RA and KG were joined that the window was going to be brief.  Folks hoped for 3-5 years.  That's what we got.

Anyone who thought that this team would be rebuilt on the fly was crazy and wrong.  If indeed this team is done, and it sure is seeming to be that way, then the rebuild begins soon.  I am hoping that the 'Danny sucks', 'Doc sucks', 'C's suck', mentality does not dominate Cblog as it did prior to the Big 3.  I expect to hear some of that, but I hope that the majority of posters will engage in conversation about how well DA is aquiring assets or how he could acquire more assets, or how he could cash his assets in.  That is what it will be all about for the next few years -- longer, if the C's rebuild is like any other franchise.  It will take 5 years of more hits than mistakes to get this team competitive again and Danny will make mistakes just like every other GM.

The bad luck started in the 08-09 season with KG going down.  We still won 62 games that year without him for a good 2-3 months.  I think we get banner 18 that year if KG is healthy. 

Let's be real here; we knew we bet the farm on 3 aging stars and we knew a season like this would be coming.  We got banner 17 and 2 good shots at 18 (both thrown off course by injuries; it happens; nothing you can do about it; KG and Perk).  Could it have been better?  Sure; but I can't really complain, we had a great ride.

I think you guys are forgetting a couple of things about the Perk trade:

-Perk had gotten injured right around that timeframe.
-Perk was looking for a big contract after the season.
-The Celtics didn't have much cap space to offer Perk.
-Tying up a lot of cap space in a long term contract for Perk, who had just gotten injured, would have been a very risky move and would have left the Celtics with Rondo + Perk (0 offense) for the future without having much room to sign great players.
-Orlando was not a threat in the playoffs last year, and so Danny tried to get guys who could best matchup with the Heat & Bulls.
-Jeff Green was at the time a much lower health risk than Perkins.
-Jeff Green should have been able to help against the Bulls & Heat.  He did not help much, which I blame on Green & Doc primarily.

My conclusion is that even if we had Perkins last year, who was running on 1 leg, we wouldn't have won the championship (especially after Rondo got injured).  We either needed Perkins fully healthy on 2 legs, or a different player.  Green was supposed to be that player.

The Antoine Walker trade made by Danny already set the precedent that if a player is coming up on a long term big contract that will hinder more than help the franchise, Danny will make a trade.  The Perkins trade shouldn't have come as such an enormous surprise, especially considering his health at the time.
